Advice for a beginner: is it too early for a GS1200?

I had a 500cc for six months over winter then test rode a GS, any great increase in speed/power wasnt really apparent then - but the ease of handling was, I had no reservations buying one & 2 years on it was the best thing for me looking back to do.

500/600cc is still a great range, but if your wanting a bigger bike for say touring - why waste money now and save getting bored.

Thanks again everyone! It is great to have such a feedback.

Giles hit the nail right on the head with what he pictured. This is exactly what I have on my mind. Have the good old tent, stove and camping gear in the cases, some food, a bottle or two of fine red wine and a good book for the evenings, and off I go on some back roads for a couple of days, be it Hungary, or the countries and mountains nearby or (farther away :-) This is what I did on bicycle when I was younger and now I want to do the same on bike. I don't need a fast bike, I don't need a capable dirt bike as these are things which concern me not at the moment. I stay away from off road, but there will surely be some unpaved gravel roads with lots of potholes on my way.

Thanks also for one advice about riding in company. I can really be a maverick when it comes to getting away from it all, and those who I'd go with do not ride bikes. But I take heed and look for company. For all my other activities I always had mentors in some ways who could help me improving and this will be no exception.

One thing to clarify though, I'm looking for a GS, not a GSA. The latter is just too much for me I think at this stage. Also a lot rarer used here.

Probably it all just boils down to reason why to change from the Transalp :-)

It is not like the transalp is a small bike anyway, if you had been riding around on a 125cc and wanted a GS it would be a different story.

I think the GS will just be a bit better in almost every way than the Transalp, and more importantly it is what you want.

Happy shopping :thumb

Whatever you decide don't forget to check out the Magyar Route 66 biker camp at Silvasarad. Great welcome, from Leyne and excellent camping or B & B.
