Hi all:

So I'm thinking of buying a brand new BMW R1200GS Adventure... I've never bought a brand new bike before so any advice would be welcome.

Are there any hidden costs or is the on the road price what I'll pay?
Are they going to be the same price at every dealer? Or should I shop around?
I'm paying cash in full so can I haggle?
What can I reasonably expect to get as freebies from BMW to seal the deal?
Should I look out for any sales BS in particular?
Apart from the 600 mile service are there any other costs?

What was your purchase experience like?

Steve

I have purchased a few new BMWs over the years. I always found the price was the same at all the dealers. They seem to do some fiddle with part exchange and give you more than is written on the invoice. I think its because BMW have tight control to prevent discounting. You are probably at a disadvantage paying cash. The dealers can do deals on clothing and accessories, Free first service is common and discounts on the first 3 services, clothing, luggage, etc have been known. I had crash bars fitted at cost price.
I have never had hidden costs, the quoted deal was always what I paid. When you read the invoice it never makes any sense but the final sum is right.
Ongoing costs are just consumables and service, all of which have been very reasonable so far.
The biggest cost will be depreciation, there are lots about in dealers s/hand with very low mileage, i'm 50/50 whether to keep mine or trade in for a GS800. Likely loss will be £3000+ in 9 months/9000m, making it the most expensive bike I have ever owned. Glad I got the cheapest lowest spec possible.

I was in your position 18 months ago. The GS was my first new bike, though I have bought many new cars. And I have no regrets buying the bike new though arguably it is not the cheapest way to be riding a WC - you will take a large hit on depreciation. However as the GSA is so new you may not be able to avoid this. And, if you are so minded, that depreciation is an acceptable cost for the pleasure of owning from new.

The OTR price is what it says, however this is the first vehicle I've owned that positively encourages endless subsequent purchases of functional but weight inflicting aftermarket add-ons, styling modifications and a huge variety of useless tat.

Reading this forum may cause you to spend hundreds if not thousands on some of the following:

- Headlight, engine, and radiator guards
- spotlight and Xmas lighting
- padded seating
- luggage
- security clamps
- water mud and rain deflectors
- exhaust systems
- fuel mapping modifications
- off road wheel/tyre sets
.....and much more

The bike is perfectly adequate as standard for general road use and touring, but you will inevitably spend a stack tinkering with it because you are (probably) a bloke.

No the price varies, shop around. BMW dealers have margin to play with but they are good at retaining it, and short supply situations can make it harder still. If you feel you can get no further movement on purchase price ask for concessions on first service, and some of the farkles and tat above, they have big margins in accessories and clothing.

Buying well is an art and skill, and you are asking the obvious questions to help achieve this. But do your research, set your budget and then stop worrying and ENJOY the experience of buying and owning a fabulous shiny new steed. Once owned the pain of the expenditure will diminish.

And ignore the disparaging co*ks on here who will tell you will spend a fortune in recovery services as everything goes wrong with your new bike. They want WCs but want to hasten the depreciation so they can buy them at your expense. And BMW do a great job looking after their customers if you really do have a problem.

Just do it.

I ordered my GSA TE in mid August from Ocean in Plymouth. Reason I used them (250 miles away) as a dealer as opposed to one closer to me was that from first contact to actual pick up of the bike I felt that my custom was personal to them. Test ride was organised as I was passing prior to getting on the Plymouth to Santander ferry, test bike was ready to go with me and wife heading for an hours ride onto the moors. It gave me a good comparison having been riding my Kawasaki GTR for four hours previously. No pressure from salesman at all.

Fast forwards a couple of months GTR sold privately having been advised of trade in price from dealer. My selling privately and being in effect a "cash buyer" enabled me to get a better deal on purchase of bike.

Bike was picked up on 28th September paperwork sorted and me happily heading on my way home to West Wales.

Have had courtesy call from salesman since and am heading back to Ocean next week for first service.

My local dealer was very different to wanting my business, his loss was Oceans gain.

Following this forum the doom and gloom with regards to al the failures was never considered as a reason not to buy. Logic being that the bike is brand new and under warranty so will get sorted by BMW if there are any issues as with the way that the R1200 RT ESA issue is being resolved.

Not sure what discounts etc you will get, after all if all the media is to be believed the GS and GSA are flying off the production line so can demand top price.

There are three BMW dealers between me and Ocean and I am not alone apparently in travelling from Wales to buy a bike from them.

I've just purchased a new GSA LC and absolutely love the bike having traded in a GS LC against it. I would shop around if you have no part exchange, not all dealers do the same deal, I got my first service free of charge, a £750 'special discount' and a good discount on topbox/panniers. If you can be bothered and I know its hard to quell the excitement of buying something new, but you are the customer and can always walk away if you're not happy with what they're offering. Dig your heels in and haggle, the dealer has always got room for improvement they just don't want to give it up easily.

Most dealers do not see cash sales as sweet deals, and will be less likely to give any sort of discount.

First service FOC is a must, and try for any xtras at cost price,I've purchased several new BMW's and have always found that if you know what you're happy to deal at most will usually try to accommodate you.

My biggest piece of advice would be,make sure that you've given everything else out there a good test before committing to a new gsa.

I brought cash, tbh cash ain't kind no longer and you have less security if things go wrong, as in if you have a pcp deal.

However i got £400 off bike, 10% off extras + free fitting, 600 mile foc service, a few bods have been given sat-navs foc or luggage so there's deals to be had, so shop around and if your in no rush to purchase wait another month or 2 when the dealers start to have quite patch than your cash purchase may have a better effect.

Alternative have a good test ride on a dealers bike and if its for you buy a private one, there's a few GSA's on the private market now fully loaded with ££££ discounted, as new and very little miles .

Steve, there are discounts to be had.......you have to shop around and if you are prepared to be flexible on colour that helps. Certain dealers will get to 8% on the phone others will claim no deal. 10% of dealer fitted accessories with no fit charge.

Being a cash buyer is not relevant other than it confirms you are a valid and able customer. Credit sales gain the saleman a bonus and the dealer a margin.

Freebies instead of discount costs the dealer less as the freebie price contains a large margin......so that is a valid way to go especially if you will buy the freebies if not......well, free!

New gsa TE

Should pick my new gsa TE up next Saturday, got a good deal with cannon motorcycles Braintree managed to wrangle top box and free first service have had power shift fitted as well, I,ve had motorcycles for the last 35yrs and this will be my third bmw Gs, in my humble opinion there's not a better motorcyle To be had, get one ordered you won,t regret it

Buy on the finance then just pay it off soon after delivery this will give the salesman more room to do a better deal and discount

Put your deal out to tender. Phone say 4 to 5 dealers telling them what you want what your part ex is. You will be amazed at what you can eventually haggle down to. Play them off against each other. I have just done that after being a loyal customer. I always thought I had got a good deal up until now.
Also it was good fun having them fighting for my business , then folding when there was absolutely nothing left to haggle.I have owned approx 12 bm's since 97 I do approx 15k + miles a year. I have only used 2 dealers to purchase the bikes.
It may not of made me any friends but saved me a few quid.

That's some great advice. Thanks :beerjug:

I should at least have a look at alternative payment to see if there are better deals - I don't really want to be tied into a long finance package. I have a GTR1400 that could be used as part exchange if it means getting a better deal rather than sell privately.

Looking at those GSA's that are on the second hand market they seem to hold there price pretty good, at least at the moment. There is not as much depreciation as I would have expected. If we were talking £3k depreciation I might reconsider and buy used but a small depreciation is acceptable to me for the pleasure of owning from new.

I will no doubt farkle the hell out of it with tat, just like I have with my F800GS as I love to personalise my bike: some mods are functional though and some are more aesthetic but you're right, most are unnecessary. There are some BMW accessories and mods I'd like, especially if I can get them at a discount. Things like the Nav5, Akrapovic and luggage I would like but are very expensive (I wouldn't get the Akrapovic, for example, at the asking price). So it seems like the best deals and savings are more likely to be had on these accessories and first services rather than actual OTR price of the bike.

No hidden costs is good to hear because I recently heard someone (possibly an American) say something about assembly fees and such. Although they may have been referring to the itemised billing. I agree, buying well is an art and a skill. I remember Dom used to do a show called 'Wrong Car, Right Car' and I've always had that in mind if I ever bought new. Some dealers will throw in all sorts to get the deal. No harm in asking and then keeping schtum for them to answer.

I service my own F800GS (out of warranty), but when I have been to my local Motorrad for parts, test rides, service and they've been very good and I hear good things about them on the forum so I would like to buy from them if possible. But I am willing to travel to get the best deals. Sounds like the first thing I should do is get on the blower and get some prices from different dealers.

I'm not to worried about failures, I don't think there are that many from my cursory look over the forum and they're covered under warranty anyway so they'll get sorted by BMW.

A free first service is indeed a must and a £750 'special discount' and a good discount on luggage sounds sweet - that's a really substantial discount. I've been really happy with my F800GS, there's always been that nagging for a GSA, there's nothing else out there that really interests me, my GTR1400 despite being awesome doesn't quite fully hit the spot for me. I've ridden the old GSA and loved it but in the end went with the F800GS (it now has 63K miles on it and been half way round the world). I know the LC GSA will be awesome but I will of course test ride it to be 100% sure.

I'll have to look a bit more into these PCP deals. If I go down the finance route and pay off ASAP won't I still incur the interest? Surely that won't be offset by any other discounts or savings? I'm not in a hurry so a couple more months wait is a good idea and I am flexible on colour. The 10% off accessories sounds like a minimum I should expect.

Thanks again for all the advice, definitely some food for thought here.

I believe if you go down PCP route and pay off early. You should get a settlement figure that will vary depending on how long you have had the loan out. Shorter the loan the less interest you pay therefore a smaller final settlement figure.

I'm with ding dong, sum of the deals private have been spot on and fully loaded, some people buy them and sell them 3 months later for whatever reason. Patience is the one, says me who has got to have in nowwww. :D

I've had finance agreements that I have paid off within weeks of taking them out and attracted no interest or costs but retained the incentive element.

Hi - I notice you are in Peterborough. I have been using Balderstons for 13 years now including the purchase of brand new 1200GS & a brand new GSA LC this May. I cannot fault them for their knowledge and service either during or after the sales. I believe I got a decent deal in both cases of buying new - David called me for the first bike and asked to tax it a month early so he could secure free panniers for me.

Balderston have serviced 5 different BMW bikes for me and met my every need with warranty or extended warranty issues.

No I don't work there but I do recognise great service when I see it - pop in and talk to David Cunningham or TJ and they will be working hard to get you the deal you want.

Highly recommended.

I couldn't agree more with Reckless. I've bought quite a few bikes from Baldies and have never been let down or felt afterwards that the deal was wrong

Yeah, they've been pretty good whenever I've used them. I was in a week or so ago picking up a gasket and chatted to them about the GSA, I'll nip in again at some point and talk prices.

Tomorrow I'm off to the dealership to place an order for a GSA. Haven't decided yet between OG and white but by tomorrow hopefully I'll have decided.

Quick question for those who already are proud owners of GSAs. Having had a GS previously I am aware that all locks on Vario top box and panniers are identical. I was wondering if this is the same for the GSA's luggage, ie given that one only needs one key for all locks on the bike, whether the locks on the top box are the same size as those on the side panniers - perhaps they also have the same part number?
