Advice for prospective new GS owner

I'm seriously toying with the idea of a GS Adventure, based on needing to slow down a bit on the straights but wanting a bike that I can throw around, plus the idea of a do-it all bke appeals as I do a fair bit of two up travel and touring - anyway test ride on saturday for half a day to try it out. Aside from that I also think the bike looks fantastic.

Firstly, if you like to throw a bike around in the bends, the standard GS has more precise handling than the GSA due to the shorter travel suspension and slightly lower centre of gravity - it's more confidence inspiring :(

Question is, what should I be going for spec and age wise for 9-10K budget, ASC, ABS, ATC, pack this and that....I'd definately like to get panniers (which are best the bmw ones?) but are the suspension and performance extras worth having as coming from a jap sports bike I currently have none of these! Would I be better getting a newer model year will less extras/options?

ABS, ESA and heated grips are essential IMHO - the ESA suspension is firmer and better damped. The "Sport" setting kept my bike in shape when fully loaded with luggage and pillion when we went to the Alps this summer.

I really don't like the traction control as it's constantly cutting in in the lower gears as the front wheel lifts. The 2010 GSA we tested on Thursday was even more sensitive. Thankfully you can switch it off manually, although you need to do this before each ride.

The GSA screen is better, but a Givi Airflow screen on my bike is better still and only cost £135.

IMHO the only advantage the GSA offers is its looks and larger fuel tank. The standard GS is a better bike to ride :thumb2

One point I would add is that the 2010 engine is much better, especially its roll-on performance in higher gears. £9-10k may get you a used 2010 GS in the next few months :nenau

Is ESA worth the money or should you just go without?

What about 30th edition versus a normal one?

Are BMW panniers the best? Will I need a BMW suit to go with it?

Is the Arai Tour x better or the Shoei Hornet? Plain colours or Long Way Down colours? I would really like to look like Ewan McGregor
