Advice GSA 1200 or 1290 or should I wait

Have a look at a late twin cam. Good power gain over your current GS and will do everything a newer one will do in real world conditions. They are proven, very reliable and if you get a Hilltop ECU upgrade or a set of AF-Xied units you will be surprised just how well they go.

This model GSA has also been voted as best bike by Ride magazine in the day. It has the best wind protection of all GS Adventures produced. Perfect if you don't want wind on your arms. Seriously.

I had an 06 GS similar to the one you have now, which got me into the whole GS thing.
Coming from more sporty bikes I was amazed at how good the handling was. I’ve upgraded
To a 2016 1200GSA, it’s simply a better bike in every department. My advice would be to try
to get some test rides and upgrade to the best bike for your budget.

I doing the trip again next week so I will reset and check my figures, I may be off…….

I was averaging 85mph both ways, so not hammering it.

Decided to get a test ride…..

You are averaging 85 mph door to door over the roughly 150 miles between between Berkshire and Devon? Which way are you going, down the motorways or through the twisties?

Are you using the whole tank or just to reserve, as I’m averaging 41 to the gallon so if it’s to reserve I get around 145 to reserve and 180 to dry ( ie run out ) .

He says that putting in “About £25 worth” of fuel. If we say £1.30 a litre, that is near enough 19.25 litres each time, into a 20 litre tank. So he must be near enough emptying the tank on each door to door run.

A UK gallon is 4.54 litres, so you are averaging 9 miles per litre. In other words, you are within 90% of the happy rule of thumb average of 10 miles per litre; not impossible or unbelievable. Breham is regularly doing 80% of the rule of thumb average……

I believe the 1200 GSA has a 30 litre tank? If so, if Breham keeps up his average of 8 miles per litre, that will give him a total range (full to empty) of 240 miles. A Berkshire to Devon round trip is about 300 miles. He won’t do the round trip without refuelling at about 60 miles from his destination in Berkshire on his return leg. Sadly, he’ll need a bike with at least a 38 litre tank size.

I believe the latest 1200 GSA has a 33 litre tank. If Breham keeps up his average of 8 miles per litre, that will give him a total range (full to empty) of 264 miles. A Berkshire to Devon round trip is about 300 miles. He’ll do the return trip without refuelling, with about 64 miles to spare.

The plot thickens , maybe he filled up at the services and bought the expensive stuff ..:D Or London prices for fuel as well , like gold down in the smoke it be.....

Personally, I wouldn't base my bike buying decision on whether I have to stop at a garage once or not, on one specific regular journey ... !!!

I want to see a race, Berkshire to Devon return…..

Used to do Folkestone (major crime) to Warrington (forensic Lab) against the clock fairly regularly!!
Fuck, that was a long day. It was the journey back at the speed limit that was the ball ache :D
(560 mile round trip!)

Me neither but it appears (in one form or another) on these pages quite regularly. The most usual is: “I need a GSA as I don’t want to fill up”.

I am sort of reminded of the tale put up by the bloke who crashed his Land Rover, down the embankment onto the railway, resulting in the derailing of two trains…. And a motor insurance claim of running into many millions.

He claimed that he’d driven his beaten up old Land Rover from A to B in some fictitious time or other. The local police, on a closed road, lights going, the whole nine yards, couldn’t get close to it. They must have had fun trying and, no doubt, had several goes…. Just to be sure.

Ahh ... The Selby train crash. Gary Hart who probably fell asleep at the wheel.

Its funny ..... Imagine being a cop, and stopping a motorist who was weaving about in a motorway lane - not enough to take action, just a few words of advice.

'sorry officer, I'm really tired ... '

'Mate - you should pull over and get a coffee and have 15 mins. Just think ... you might nod off, drive down an embankment, land on a rail way line and crash. A train might come along, hit your vehicle and de-rail. Then another train might come along, hit the de-railed train and de-rail too. Ten people might die, 82 might get very seriously injured (lost limbs , broken backs etc) your insurance alone will have to pay out 22 million quid, and you'll go to prison for five years for death by dangerous ... '

'errrrr, I think youre exaggerating a bit there officer, but I'll heed you advice and pull over and get a coffee .... '

:D

To my mind, that cautionary advice would be good policing. Though to some here, nothing short of nailing the bod to the large blue motorway sign would do.

Unless your vertically challenged Id say GSA is worth it for spec, Id recommend anything from 2017 in a TE spec, gearbox issues were sorted by then.

After the past 18 months you need to be saying life is too short to wait!
The 1250 is fantastic and I've loved them all over the past 12 years.
Each one has been a little better than that before and I'm sure the next one will be even better still.
But pleasure is really hard to measure, so for what it's worth my advice is take it when you can.
A sunny day and an open road - who cares what the power is if you're smiling.
Theres always going to be a better bike in someone opinion - enjoy something while you can.

I have a 2013 registered 1200 TC GSA. I can't compare it to the 1250 as I've never ridden one of those but I do know I can get well over 300 miles on a tankful of fuel. I do ride like a girl though.
