I've purchased a set of Puig engine / crash bars to fit to my F800GS. The instructions are pretty poor and I started to fit them yesterday. On the right hand side (as you're sitting on the bike), I have to remove the top engine mounting bolt. I started to loosen this to remove it and noticed a chrome cup which sits between the frame and bike. This became loose and looked like it might possibly drop out if I continued to remove the bolt.

At this point I decided to stop what I was doing and seek advice on here before advancing further. Can anyone advise me further please?

Fitted Puig bars to my wifes F700GS, It has the same frame fixings. I think the item you are referring to is a spacer about 10mm thk fitted between the frame and engine. It will slip out when the bolt is removed but slides back in easily enough. On our set every bolt hole and fixing lined up perfectly, we were pleased with the fit and finish.
Despite being at the bottom end of the price range the bars worked well in a couple of stationary drops the bike has had, just a bit of scuffing on the bars but nothing on the bike.
The only problem I find is my Knees catch on the frame connection under hard braking.

Yes Sooty you are bang on. That's the spacer. I'll have another go at fitting them again this weekend then. I just hope my knees don't catch on them under heavy braking like you else that will really start to grind on me. Thanks for taking the time to reply and got the advice.
