Hi all,

I have read through many threads on this and other forums and I thought I was ready to start fitting my Zumo 660.

I have decided to use the 'optional accessory connector (X9349) and CAN-BUS plug/lead as described in a thread on here.

Unlike may posters I had no problem getting the Can-Bus plug/lead, the spares man a my local dealer was very helpful but he did say I'd need to install a relay which he kindly gave me the part number and supplier for.

His reasoning for this was that he has had a number of non-BMW Zumo issues where the cradle has continued to draw power even when the ignition is off resulting in a flat battery.

Has anyone else had this issue and if so where and how would you go about fitting the relay?

My initial thought would be to power the relay by jockeying off the ignition output live wire and installing the relay switch on the Sat-Nav live, does this make sense or is it even necessary?

Thanks in advance

Damo

I've had my 660 wired using the Accessory connector without any relay, for almost two years now. a couple of my mates also have the same setup.

None of us have had any issues with power drain. The 660 shuts down about 30 seconds after the ignition is switched off...end of:thumb2

Cheers Yonkyo, will risk it then. I mean what's the worst that can happen?

I'm guessing from your location that you had the same experience as I just had. I went into CW to get the canbus lead for my shiny new 660 to go on my 09 1200gs and got the advice about flat batteries. What did you do in the end? All ok?

+1

I have used my Garmin on an 05 GS and a 09 GSA. Both bikes took power directly from the satnav socket. I did not bother with the connecter, just poked the bare wires in the socket holes. First bike worked OK like this for 4 years and the GSA is still OK after two.

Absolutely no problem and the advice to use a relay makes little sense. Where is the dealer suggesting it is used?

Option 1. The satnav is powered from the battery via a relay and the relay is powered by the can-bus. This is the same as direct powering from the can-bus. The satnav will continue to get power while the can-bus is powered plus holding the relay on uses a small amount of extra power. This would also require an additional fuse.

Option 2. Power directly from the can-bus but put a relay in the line which is powered from an ignition source, another fuse required again.. This would power down the satnav as soon as the ignition was turned off - which is a pain. If it was done this way you might as well forget the can-bus socket and power the satnav direct from an ignition source.

Mate I had mine Zumo lead plugged into the socket destined for GPS and (touch wood) never had a problem. After 15 to 30 Sec of switching off ignition the Zumo asks whether to switch off or remain on battery power. In the end it is always your call but... if we're listening to all the gizmos, gadgets and accessories needed, where does all stops??? I even been quoted £320 to fit some fog lights coz it needed some special connection due to the canbus system the GS has. Uhmmm:confused::eek

And guess what? Fog lights fitted at a very small fraction of that price and without problems!

i suspect that the advice re the relay is if your going to fit to the battery, as that is the advice i give out ,but as has been said if your using the canbus socket you dont need it at all..

and as for 320 to fit lights?

i always quote three hours to fit a pair of fogs to a gs this covers the wiring in and fitting of all brackets and setting up the beam ..

even at TT prices it dont come to that!!:blast

When I bought my last GSA I fitted a front power socket, satnav and Autocom. To save lifting the tank I just slid a stiff wire under and pulled cables through as needed.

When the bike was being serviced I got a call from the dealer saying the wiring was preventing them doing the service but they would happily take the wires out and reinstall it all with a better routing. Total cost £50.00 .

Where did £320.00 to fit lights come from?

You ask well! Same question I asked myself! Was I fitting a pair of fog lights and wiring supplied by me or was I buying it all included on those £320???? Nah, "apparently" it's a rather tricky job and time consuming - I was told! Needless to say where I will be taking my beloved GS to next time!
