Look in local admags for luggage I found three Givi maxi cases (50L each) for £80 and their in ace nick ! Just keep looking no need to spend hundreds.
My Touratech Zega's cost me £250 and I sold my H&B's with frames and inner bags for the same - these bargains do come up but they are few and far between and you have to move quick, make that VERY QUICK!!

I bought jesse bags for my 1150.So far theve been exelent. The bike and bags holding up to abuse.Aluminium panniers have also got the advantage that wen you drive away with the disc lock on,combined with engine bars the cylinders dont go anyway near the deck.I would check out vern's panniers b4 you buy.I bought the jesse's b4 I knew he made his own otherwise I would may have bought his.

Thanks to all for the info will now have to go and smash the piggy bank and see whats achievable

:D

They are not Lilac they are Purple and thats why I wear something over them.
Anyway I thought as an ex Booty you would have appreciated some colourfull 'off watch' attire though I admit they are not as fetching as a Fred Perry, faded jeans and Desert Boots.

Givi topbox

Prices for Givi top box/rack/lights

52ltr box (black with red reflective lens) £168.42
Brake lights (Fit inside case via lens as above) £25.80
GS1150 Mono rack £69.32

Total £263.54

I can get discount which brings price down to £210.83
Carrier service may be extra but I'm working on that one!!

Topboxes...

I always wondered where you put all your camping gear when using a topbox;
If I go away for 3/4 weeks camping/walking/walking, with pilllion
I need something bigger for that; the Zega cases are filled with
books/clothing/walking shoes/whiskey ect, tankbag filled with
fuelstove, cooking gear, tools, spare cables, extra food, camera+lenses ect, so I have to use an Ortlieb 90l bag for my tent, chairs, sleeping bags, matresses, fishing rods and bbq...

Where do you topbox users put all your gear?????

THE CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have strapped a bag to the top of the topbox and filled with sleeping bags and lightweight gear but you have to watch the weight over the rear.

Depends what bike Im on to where I put my gear. With most previous bikes with hard luggage, the tent got bungee'd to the top box and the sleeping bags got bungee'd to the top of the panniers. With soft luggage I bungee stuff anywhere I can.If Im flying solo then everything gets shoved in a black bin bag and put on the back seat with a cargonet over it.

Example...

This is what my bike looked like when going to Iceland in 1998;
Most off the red bags contain extra (warm) clothing and walking
gear...
Would be a problem to put that in a topcase...

This year I think Im going to try the touratech 'elephant ear tankbag'(the one with the wee bags at the side).

Pict,

Got one (VP45, I think it's called). Good bag. The 'bra' takes a couple of minutes to fit and, as well as the zip to hold the 3 bags on, has a large area of velcro allowing you to attach the map pocket directly to it, for when you don't need the bag. The map pocket is an excellent size (A4, I think), much better than the Baglux one I used before. I've heard people are unhappy with the raincover - I'm not, it works fine, although, of course, it only keeps the tank bag waterproof, the side bags leak like sieves. The bag attaches to the bra by a large calibre nylon/plastic zip, which works fine once you're used to it. Th bra comes without a hole for the filler cap (apparently this is so they don't have to keep half a dozen different models in stock for different bikes). I got a local saddler to cut a hole & trim it with plastic (don't use leather - fuel will dry it out & crack it in no time), I think he charged me a fiver or so....

It will sound your horn on full left lock!

VP 45

If you look @ Wunderlich, they sell the VP45 in two different sizes,
the newer one with a larger tankbag then the old model.
Like the Touratech version they are made by Kahedo.

Beware of using the Givi 52 litre. Its huge but the big overhang means I've already cracked and had replaced one tailpiece because of over-loading. Shelled out for the BM panniers to share the load. loverly!

Timbo,Ive had a givi 52l fitted to my 1150 since Igot it.Could you give a few more details regarding the breakage. How much were you overloading it by etc and where did it break.

I bought an adaptor plate from one of the list members and he told me that it had cracked his tailpiece. I only use the topbox for storing helmets when I'm parked up and a set of water proofs everything ele goes in the Panniers.

Have Fun

Andy, I've had the same experience with installing an unmentioned vendor's gear that attaches under the rear grab bar and the rear slots on the BMW cast aluminum rear rack. My BMW rear rack cracked to multiple places. Replacement cost from BMW is not trivial.

Why don't manufacturers of aftermarket accessories design gear that is attached to the rear subframe and _not_ to the fragile cast aluminum BMW rear rack?

Mine broke after a ride with a laptop and change of clothes in the back. Probably my fault but shouldn't really be so weak. Hence the panniers which do not seem to mind the weight. I'd use the BM top box but understand they have the same problem because of the pivot effect off the back of the bike on the standard GS.
