Advice please - Giants Causeway

Would someone mind giving me an idea of how long it would take to get from Belfast docks (day after tomorrow - mid morning) to the Giants Causeway ... then to return down to Dublin for late afternoon the same day ......

is this a mad idea or is a do-able? We have a day free on Thursday before needing to head south from Belfast to Dublin ..... and I have always wanted to go to the Giants Causeway (having never been)

..... can someone advise?

If you are seeing the Causeway, you'd be mad not to get there via the Coast Road. Takes an extra 45 mins, but well worth the ride up. Give yourself 2 hours.

It's been a while, but the walk from the carpark down to see the Causeway and back was surprisingly long... So allow a couple of hours there to get the photos, loo and cafe.

Heading South from the Causeway, go inland and take the main route to Belfast. An hour and a bit... Plus a couple more hours to Dublin.... If you are a fast ride that's another 3 and a half hours. If you are taking your time..... Well it's your call.

Is it do-able? Absolutely!......

But make sure you leave Belfast after breakfast. Have lunch at the Causeway and have a late tea in Dublin.

Sounds like a good day out and around 200 miles at a guess.

I'm collecting my new bike tomorow... Sadly I'm working Thursday, but had it been Friday, I'd have been offering to join you.

I'm with Betty Swollocks on this, very do-able and you should do the coast road.

You are missing out on a lot of attractions though if time is against you.

Carrick-a-ried rope bridge, Bushmills whisky distillery, NW200 events and Joey's bar & new exhibition to name but a few!!

When you get to Giants Causeway try and bluff your way to ride down from the car park, it's a long walk down, and an even longer one back!

We went early morning and just drove straight down to the causeway - even rode the GSA up the track to 'The Organ' with the wife on the back - with no problems or objections from anyone.

My advice Go straight up the motorway and main roads to the Giant's causeway

My reasoning do the quick bit up and make your trip south more enjoyable by going via the Coast you make your journey much more pleasant and it gives it a chance to warm up that way too :-D

It's a nice 20min walk down to the stones or you can take the bus. Take a hat it was very cold in the wind yesterday. The weather/temperature's changing every 30min.

IMO, the stones aren't really that impressive, bit of a let down really. If times allows take the Torr head road and detour to Murlough Bay.

Paddywagon do the causeway from Dublin via Belfastand back to Dublin as a day trip so your trip has to be well doable hope this helps jjh

Thanks for the advice guys. Up at 4.30am for the ferry from IOM to Belfast .... and will take the fast route to the Causeway ... then back down to Dublin .... it's just I have always wanted to see it .... but never had the chance ..... until now!!

Another holiday for all the other suggestions .... a wedding to go to .... and family time for my Dubliner!!

A walk to the causeway will be a relief after being cramped on a boat and sitting in a car for 4 or 5 hours .... and living on an island ....and by the Irish Sea ... we are used to the cold winds Hopefully none too strong for the ferry tomorrow.

What a great trip

Here in Dublin after a really great trip. Easy drive to the Giants Causeway - accompanied by lots of Manx bikes on the way to the NW200.

Poured with rain but not too cold. Lovely walk down to the stones and some fab time for boys who like to clamber over rocks ( young and old (er). Nice walk back followed by a hearty stew at the cafe.

Fast road back to Belfast - then on down to Dublin. So worth the detour
