Hi again,

Sorry if this is in the wrong area of the forum but couldn't see a more appropriate spot.

Trying to sell my old bike, never sold one privately before and I have a guy coming to view it soon.

What's the deal with test rides? If I take the advice of MCN / Bike trader websites etc, I should only allow a test ride if he is prepared to leave a deposit for the full value of the bike. Is this the done thing?

Don't want to scare him off, but equally dont want to leave myself exposed...

Thanks heaps!

Hi m9fnd,

Sadly there are to many untrustworthy individuals these days so a test
ride without the full asking price in cash as a deposit is not unreasonable.

Be upfront with the buyer and let him know in advance that this will be a
requirement, if they are genuine they will understand, this is your only
safe guard against it being damaged or stolen.

Hope this helps

Not unreasonable at all - if they're serious about buying then they will have access to the cash anyway. And they'l also want a test ride anticipating leaving this cash as a deposit.

One thing to remember is that they must bring at least third-party insurance for a test ride. There's an offence of allowing another to drive a vehicle in your possession / control with no insurance...

Most fully insured people have insurance to ride any one's bike (third party only).. Please check before letting anyone on your bike
