My lap top is now fading fast, battery life is just about non existent, its been a good workhorse but things have moved on it seems somewhat since I bought it!
I also have a hankering for a tablet, light to carry if on bike trips, although what would really be good would be a tablet that can easily run the bag of sh*t that is mapsource, so new routes could be plotted overnight but thats just a pipe dream I suppose!

unless there is someway of squaring this particular circle, I am looking for recomendations for a laptop...ms office word excel etc, picture/ music storage and a tablet...(mostly for basic internet stuff and also to act as a ereader, with access to adobe digital editions so i dont lose the books already bought!)

what does the panel think are the best options??????

thanks:beerjug:

Depends how much size matters but you can get a tablet running Windows and either a keyboard cover or have a separate portable keyboard. You can actually get tablets all the way up to powerful i7 processors so performance shouldn't be a problem. Screen size might be for you though with 13 inch being the general and affordable largest. Even those are expensive.

Other options would be a simple 15" laptop of your choice. Just about any of them will do what your looking to do so pick your price point. Personally I Would recommend something Lenovo, manage 200 of them at work with no issues. Tablet depends what camp you want to be in, Android or IOS and screen size. If Android and 7" will do you then the nexus 7 is outstanding value for money. 10" take a look at the nexus 10 or one of the Samsung tab range both good performing tablets with the nexus being the best value for money.

thanks mareki
food for thought, have seen something of lenovo....will research them a bit more... wife has a samsung tablet (10.1) which is good, but of course, not compatible with mapsource!...

I had a similar decision to make.. and I went for an 11" notebook (a small laptop) with windows 8. An HP Touchsmart.

Mapsource (and Basecamp) work perfectly, plus it has a proper keyboard.

I wouldn't say it's he best, but it works very well for me.

No outside of a windows tablet nothing will. Trouble is that a windows tablet with full windows and some performance is a fair bit more expensive than an Android tablet. Depends on your budget I guess. If you want to splash the cash then get a laptop and Windows tablet. Cut it back a bit get a good windows tablet and keyboard that will do it all. Last choice and possibly cheapest is a general laptop and tablet.

In a similar situation looking to replace an aging netbook I have gone for an Asus transformer t100. Laptop and tablet in one. Good battery life. Runs w8.1. Basecamp is fine and it works well as a tablet. So far I am very impressed. Off (or should that be M'off) to India in a few weeks and that will be the acid test. Not the cheapest but cheaper than a laptop and a tablet separately. I have added a 64gb micro SD card for extra storage for maps etc. Worth thinking about anyway.

PS It comes with a full MS office installation and licence included in the price!

had a quick shufty at the asus as it seems to do everthying I am likely to want, but I notice the Q&A section talks about it having an italian keyboard layout and also the ms office is not the full version but a 1 month free trial...this may be just amazon so will look elsewhere!!

update just looked at john lewis and same machine is sub £300!!
and has full version of ms office....looking hard at this one!:D

Definitely full office and a standard keyboard. There are several similarly named models. Mines a 32gb T100. I bought it from Tesco Direct. JL usually gives a better warranty. It's not a powerful machine but I decided it was a good compromise. It's this one:

Look at one first. It's not big!

hi mate this is the one john lewis have at £299.99
Asus Transformer Book T100TA Convertible Tablet Laptop, Intel Atom, 2GB RAM, 32GB, Windows 8.1 & Microsoft Office 2013, 10.1" Touch Screen
I have a spare 32gb card somehwere so for what i would be using it for that may well be enough storage for mapsh*t and pictures taken on tour...
the small size is fine its about same as samsung 10.1 plus has a keyboard.............

That looks like the one. I paid £275 from Tesco when they had a £25 off offer going.

Just ordered off john lewis an asus transformer...and a 64gb sd card from memeory bits!!

as my lap top has just suffered screen death I will not be replacing it, I have an old dell tower that does everything that the lap top did so will resurect that for home use

thanks for all the help, much appreciated:beerjug:
