I've been tinkering with my 1150 this afternoon (cutting off some old tie wraps etc- nothing major) and the bike is suddenly idling a 4000 RPM and running lumpy.

I did disconnect the battery but, for the life of me, can't imagine that's has anything to do with it.

What's baffling me is that I went for a ride this morning and the bike ran just fine.

Does anybody have any advise or suggestions as to what I may have done?

Thanks all

did you lift the tank and disturb the throttle cable from its housing? The outer sleeve sits on the top of the housing rather than in it

Hey Wessie, yes I did lift the tank slightly to remove an old charger cable. I'll have a look and see if that cures the problem...Fingers crossed.

No joy i'm afraid. TBH the throttle cable is moving freely but what's puzzling me is how lumpy the engine's suddenly running....

This is an easy one! Check the throttle cable outer are seated properly on the throttle bodies. If that doesn’t fix it, check that the cables are seated properly at the cable junction box that sits below the battery/ABS unit.

not sure you have checked the right thing - the inner cable will move - look at where the outer sheath meets the throttle body, compare one side to the other. There are threads on here with pictures.

Cheers fellas, I’m a mechanical idiot so need an idiots guide to investigating the options you’ve suggested. If there are any step by step guides, that would be totally awesome.

The said photo is on the right side of the bike, just below the back end of tank 👍Click it back in and all will be good .

I hate being the harbinger of doom, but the cable outer can come out of its seat at either end, so can look completely fine by the throttle bodies. The problem is sometimes at the other end, in the splitter box, and that is the absolute most royal of pains in the arse. If you’re lucky, it can be manipulated back in with a little twisting and pulling/pushing.

This happened to me first week I had my first r1150gs , local BMW dealer were useless on the phone and said if I got the bike recovered at my expense they would have a look but reckoned it would be the coils or fuel injection and very expensive.
Did an internet search and that is how I discovered the cure on this very site and fixed it in seconds
