I'm thinking of going this route now after a disastrous time with power commander autotune.

From what I can see it offsets the lambda sensor data so that the ecu adds more fuel by a user set ratio of 4 6 8 % ect

I'm keen to see how many guys on here are using AF-XIED and what they think?

I've spoke to Micheal @ Beemerboneyard who sell them and with express shipping there coming in at $400 (£260ish)

A drive to hilltop is going to cost £360 plus fuel from Edinburgh.
 
If you search out the posts from mistacat, he's made A review of AF-Xied on the R1200. I think there are some comments in the Oilhead forum here and the Boxer forum and vendor forums on Advrider too.

The remap at hilltop can alter timing (in theory) and wide throttle angles. But if the O2 sensors stay connected cruising AFR has to remain at 14.7:1 (lambda=1). As a result, you don't see riders talking about consistently riding one gear higher (e.g. 5th where they used to run 4th). When riders install a lambda-shift device like the AF-XIED, their cruise AFR drops richer, they gain low-end torque and mid-high RPM engine smoothness.

If you start with the AF-XIED and don't like it you could sell it. If you spend 50% more on the remap, you own it. I'd try the add-on first. But I've been an advocate of lambda-shifting for several years so hopefully you'll hear from others.

Don't know how similar this will be to a device that I've seen M&P are selling. IIRC it's called a Procon and is about £80, seems to just fool the engine to think the air is cooler but has a simple dial adjuster.
 
It can only alter fueling when in cruise as that is the only time the ecu looks at the sensors. If that is all you want then go for it.
 
If you download Logworks, and send me your email address I can send you data files for 20 minute road runs all conditions, showing both cylinder Air fuel ratios Versus road speed, engine rpm, engine load, throttle position. these are for the AF-xieds on a 2009 R1200GS. The data files are for settings 6 and 7.
Here are some points taken from the Graphs on setting 7.
MPH Throttle position Air fuel ratio.
31 -------- 2.4% -------- 14.0 to 1
48 -------- 14.6% -------- 13.6 to 1
65 -------- 17.3% --------- 13.5 to 1
70 -------- 22% -------- 13.6 to 1
80 ------- 30% ------- 13.7 to 1

These are just random points taken at steady cruise positions, the last being on a private road of course.
I don't have any connection with the AF-Xied just tried PCV ,Autotune etc which I found not to suit my bike.
These lambda offset devices work the proof is in the data, recorded on an Innovate LM2 2 channel wide band with the other data coming from a 16 pin OBD2 connected to the BMW ECU (BMSK),
You will see from the data that all throttle positions are covered, there are full throttle pulls included.
 
I should have said all these readings were in 6th gear.
At full throttle 100% from 65 to 85 mph in 6th shows an Air fuel ratio of 12.5 to 1. ( ideal for max power)
When adjusting the Xied to a different setting I have found that it takes a while ( a few tanks of fuel) to settle down. Initially it seemed a little on the rich side for each setting.

And is in my view the best money you can spend on your bike's engine. If your'e going to keep your bike for a while cammy you'll never regret it, even if it is a bit more expensive than other fuelling solutions.
 
Have you tried dynojet , there are near Preston , there are the main agent for PC 5 there should set it up , I used them on my 06 gs worked a treat

I'm with you on this one especially as Chris (Mistacat) is just down the road! (£266.25)

You're correct that the BMSK only actively uses the O2 sensor while cruising. As it turns out that directly covers more than half of the fuel map and about 80-90% of riding time.

However, because the BMSK uses the Lambda Control Factors it computes during Closed Loop operation to then calculate Long Term Trims, the O2 sensor and any shift in its lambda value affects the entire fuel map. So if you add 6% to closed loop, even the WOT fueling is increased by 6% after a few tanks of fuel.

I'm booked to ride down to hilltop 2 weeks today....I like the look of AF XIED but if my ECU can be programmed to achieve best results then that's the way for me.... Nothing needing connected or stored under the seat.

Geoff can remap the ECU. Just post it down and he will post it back. He has such an extensive library, the result will be very close to a full dyno setup.

You can even call him to discuss on one of those old fashioned fone thingies.

I can appreciate that. Sunny South Devon is not (that) much closer but I would also like to see the job done.

Don't forget the bikes run a lot better on posh petrol (97 or 99 RON) than plain 95. It allows the ECU to use more ignition advance so puts less stress on the exhaust valves. As Geoff removes the lean running issues, its probably less necessary after a remap, but the bike will always run better on posh. :)

I am not technically minded enough to understand your questions, let alone know the answers BUT I know Geoff, & his racing background, & I would suggest his technical knowledge & skill is considerable.
I have to say I have knowledge of at least a dozen owners whose bikes have received this treatment, (including Honda VFR's & Ducati's) some several years ago, & all seem not just happy with it, but in some cases have brought newer machines back for the same. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
 
Since this is a thread about the AF-Xied it seems a reasonable place to question the choice of an alternative solution that gets brought up in the thread.

I'm okay with the idea that the proof of the pudding is in the eating but some also like to know whether it's vanilla or chocolate, and whether the sweetness is sugar or sugar-substitute.

One problem with user reports is selection-bias. A well-known product sold on Advrider was said to improve throttle responsiveness. There were literally hundreds of glowing reports from owners. It was later shown that the product had no effect on R1200 bikes because of using a wrong component value. How do we explain the glowing reports?

I'm not saying Hilltop mods don't work, I'm just curious what changes they make. The questions I asked in the link above are basic for someone skilled enough to rewrite the chip. Why don't they describe what they've done, in a format where they retain their specific secrets (e.g. Timing is advanced, but they don't say how many degrees. Or acceleration enrichment curve altered, etc.)?

Rewriting a chip isn't the holy grail since the design of the BMSK precludes many changes. For instance, you can't rewrite the map and alter fueling in the Closed Loop area where we do 80% of our riding. That can only be done by either a) disabling closed loop (do they do that?) or b) externally shifting the lambda value of the O2 sensor.

We need someone to get a setup like Mistacat and to have his bike reprogrammed and then take some test rides while logging with his dual LC-2 setup and data logger.
