Not seen it yet but allegedly the AT gets the nod over the GS in Bike's full comparison test in latest mag :augie

Should be interesting, the previous group test basically seemed to say the KTM and the GS were much better but the Honda was cheaper.

I rode a new GS and the AT and then bought a second-hand GS instead of a new AT. I liked the bike but felt that Honda were taking the P with extras (fitting not included!) and the dealers were riding the hype a bit too much.

I wonder how they'll hold up on the second-hand market?

Phil

Slays - Gets the nod

Gets the nod - Slays

Nope no matter how I try and say it putting those words together to describ an outcome is just stupid

Haven't people yet realised that in order to keep the whole show running then everyone has to have a go at the top - this is why bike mags always big up new bikes (unless they really are very bad) - it is in their interests to do so because they are part of the whole show. The favourite at the moment is the AT because it is new and a long awaited replacement for the old AT that some people liked a lot. We as consumers are the pawns in the game.

The one really interesting thing is that the GS has been at the top for so long - the reason? Well maybe BMW pay the best 'incentives' or it really is a very good bike. I am sure the AT is a very good bike BUT will we see as many of them on the roads as the GS once the initial hype dies down????

I'm sure the AT is a very good bike and will win a lot of fans .... I must try one :D

+1 me to. Although it would have to be much better than the figures and a lot of tests I have watched/read suggest for my needs which are 100% road use and 90% 2-up!

Tried the AT and it didn't feel at all special, in fact I was quite happy to get back on the 600 Transalp that I rode to Wheels Motorcycles for the test ride.
I can't help thinking the trickle feed of videos etc from Honda has done its job superbly.

Nearly run in.

Except that most people have ridden one and thought it stunning, such as :

I test rode one yesterday. Ive ridden a lot bikes in the last fourty years and the AT is one of the best. Could not find one thing I didnt like in the three hours I had it. I can honestly say it is probably the best bike I have ever ridden. I will buy one.

Mark, what makes a bike feel special for you ?

I avoid brand new models as I don't want to be the sucker doing the beta testing.

When there is a few thousand ATs that have done 30/40,000 miles then we will know how good it is.

To be honest I've read loads of write ups on the at but like the Ktm they say it's more bias to off-road compared to the gs, just take a look how many gs's out there compared to ktms, triumphs etc I'm bias as I've just taken delivery of of a tc gsa and love it rides pillion so well with all the kit did think about the 800 bit a friend of mine has it and it does feel more like an off road bike sitting on it rather than in the bike if that makes sense but the gs is soon easy to ride so much torque in every day riding I would find it hard to swap the gs as it really does the lot for your average rider, think the Honda like the 800 would struggle with pillion and all the gear on an average European trip ?.. Just my point of view and the residuals are second to non on gs's

Just read the Bike Mag test and it's all on UK roads. They prefer the AT as its a more genuine adventure bike . Quote " If you want a GS the AT wont stop you buying one. They are not the same thing. the BMW is still the best all rounder . However if you want an adventure bike with a bit more focus and clear cut purpose the Honda is bang on the money. Blending image, involvement and great dynamics with refinement, usability, unique feel and , crucially, a real sense of rough stuff capability, the Africa Twin is impossible to ignore. It generates pride and is the one we prefer riding . Isn't that what matters? "

As previously stated is gets slated for its pillion comfort. All though that's the opinion of just one pillion who tried it.

Even when comparing it to the ESA BMW it was interesting how they really rated , and preferred , the ride quality of the HOnda. They also loved the engine refinement and the slick gearbox. They rated the fuel efficiency and also although it's slower they never felt short changed thanks to the much smoother delivery in its torque curve and shorter gearing.

In summary the BMW is a great bike and a better tourer . The AT is just as good on the road and has a sense of quality, refinement and sense of purpose that edges out the Beemer.

Arsey's headline grabber whilst excessive has an element of truth. :thumb

At the risk of sounding partisan I think you are confusing Honda with BMW .......

So the GS is the better all rounder and the AT is more rough stuff oriented - been saying this for months and got slagged off for it! Good to see that Bike magazine agrees with me :)

And all without coming within 2 miles of an actual bike of which you know so much about !! Any plans to test one yet ?:rob

It's not exactly rocket science to see that the Africa Twin is a more focused bike than the GS.It's been built for a purpose rather than be a middle of the road jack of all trades and master of none.
Obviously if people have to have a bike that's good for pillions and aren't allowed out the house without the nagger tagging along then the GS will be more your cup of tea.
But some of us prefer an alternative, and if the alternative just happens to be well built and not look like it melted after being hit with the ugly stick, then bring it on.

GS Slayer !! Eh,Nutty !!!

Wrong again , you just read what you want to see. They said it was the one they prefer riding and they never rode it off road. :thumb

But how could they prefer it on road with it's 21/18 wheel combo ??? :aidan

Surprised Nutty isn't around to chip in,perhaps he's taken Mrs Nutjob to Nandos for a posh luvvy meal for deux !!!

.................

I know you're taking the rip but, on the Orange 1190 most reports said that the R with 21/18 wheels was the better road bike than the vanilla bike with 19/17 wheels - also borne out by our very own Cookie who's owned both bikes. Engineer (sic) needs to actually ride the fecking bikes rather than sit behind his Italian coffee table reading bollox in magazines :)
