Hello all,

My 1150adv developed a problem whilst in indiaaaaarrrrgh and now that I am back I'd like to fix the bugger. After the bike starts it occasionally wheezes like an old giffer slightly - strange noise but I have been told that it could be that the starter motor is carbonised - as in its a filthy sod and needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Being a man without job or money at the moment, can I take the starter motor out and clean it with the aid of my haynes manual dya think?

Has anyone done this - any suggestions?

The battery is a bit kak as well - bought it in Cambodia for 30 dollars, this combination of shite battery and starter motor isnt great on a cold morning.

Bloody ABS never initialises properly either, so new battery is probably immenent.

Cheers guys,

Brian

Hoiking the starter out is easy.
Do it at the same time as you remove the old battery to teplace it.
Remove the plastic cover near LH footrest (1 allen screw),disconnecting the aux 12V socket.
Remove big fat cable from starter solenoid plus the thin cable from same.
Remove 2 bolts holding in starter and remove.
Clean all crap off it and ensure bendix gear runs up/down smoothly.
Re-assemble in reverse sequence, fit new battery and Robert is your mothers brother.

Oh yes,you can check the clutch plate thickness and signs of oil leaks while you are poking around in there;if you feel so inclined.

cool

as easy as that!

thanks colban, that will hopefully have saved me 230 quid for a new starter motor.

cheers
