Hi, has anyone replaced their exhaust collectors yet?
I need to cover the mechanical clatter, and changing the slip-on silencer makes naff-all difference, so it’s time to get serious!
Akrapovic and Remus don’t seem to be doing any yet, but I see Arrow do a straight-through thing (no cat or valve) and QD offer something with a small silencer and valve.
I’m guessing we’ll get an error message to deal with if we do away with that troublesome valve.
I’d be grateful for your experiences on the subject…

Mine is reasonably quiet but i have fitted a HP Corse and disconnected the flappy valve and it sounds very much like my 1250 + akrapovic.

Thanks for the responses, guys.
I did try running the bike for a short while without the BM slip-on silencer, and it was still a bit too quiet thanks to the efforts of the cat and silencer in the collector.
I’ll probably end up trying the straight-through Arrow version (along with a HealTech servo eliminator, thanks Schtum) with the standard silencer, but would love to know how noisy this is going to be, if anybody has tried it yet.
I don’t want to make enemies of all my neighbours when I have an early start!

FYI…
I tried disconnecting the exhaust valve cables this afternoon, and had a run round the block.
No error/fault messages!

I thought the mechanical clatter would drive me mad... but I've got completely used to it. On the other hand, I find the standard exhaust to be plenty fruity enough; particularly at any sort of speed or loading. The engine makes the most clatter at low revs and low throttle openings... you are going to have to have a very noisy exhaust to drown it out. Can't you just convince yourself it's the noise of mechanical components doing their job, at high compression ratios, within a fairly light and high performance engine? That's the truth of the matter!

Thanks again for taking the time, guys.

Sergio, brilliant, every search I’ve done so far on Akra only came up with the slip-on silencers.

Schtum, does it affect my life if the ECU is holding my dirty secrets?!

Task Mule, well-stuctured question! The challenge is to make a decent exhaust note, cover some of the more annoying rattles (like 3 ball bearings in a tin, as somebody else on this forum once memorably said), and not piss off everybody near me.

Stanley, good point, well made! I’m sure I will one day get used to all the noises (none of my previous GS’s was a shiftcam, so it’s all new to me) but it sounds horribly like knackered little ends to me, and it would be good to at least partially hide it with a traditional flat-twin note.

It has the potential if you were, for example, to fit a full system sans cat and then run it for too long at WOT without having the fuelling adjusted to suit, drop a valve, cook a piston etc and then try to make a warranty claim. :nenau

They will be stored in the ECU, however.
If Only the control cables are disconnected/removed and the sevo motor is left plugged in and connected it doesn't throw an error code as the system see's everything as normal. the servo still operates, it just isn't controlling anything. :)

So I see, just the £1700!
Nice looking, though…
Seems like nobody on here has replaced their collectors, I’ll report back when I’ve eventually made the change, sometime over winter.

I always worry about the warranty when you do these things ?
