Took my Panzer to the MOT place the other day and the guy told me he nearly failed it cause there was too much play in the rear wheel.
Quick call to chad(which at the time was scooting around Scotland) and it confirmed my fears. No you can not just tighten it up,go to the Dealer.

Well this is what i did yesterday. After a quick stop at Chads for a Gallon mug of brilliant coffee he decidet to escort me to South London Motorad.
These are the guys which helped me so brilliantly last year.
So we rock up there, just about parked the bikes when the owner came running out greeting us and offering us some coffee.
When he asked what he could do for me i told him about the play in the rearwheel.
He immediatly went to the workshop guys and they wheeled my bike straight in and had a look at it.
While we had another coffee the guys came back with the report

Final drive gone again(this one lasted 12k miles)Gearboxseals gone as well as my rear disc damaged.(not sure why the disc was damaged but i am sure Chad will explain)

The owner then told me not to worry as he would phone BMW customerservice and that he is on my site
After 1-2 hours he came back to me and gave me the news.
Parts cost £1400

After a bit of number crunshing he said to me he would do it all for £150
Result

Once again i have to thank SLM for there brilliant customer service(and the coffee)
I only can recommend these guys and will be pushing any buisness there way

My problem is that my GS is my dreambike. Its the best bike i ever owned/ridden and i love it.I know i have obviously a lemon but it will not stop me from loving this bike.
Again now with having paid a "contribution" towards the fixing my drive and stuff has a warranty. As Chad says "the rest of the bike is running fine" so maybe i have to get used to the fact that mine needs a final drive more often then you guys need chain and sprocket

all good in the end

it was hard watching you worry about this yesterday mate , as i know how much you love that bike and that you couldnt have afforded to do the nesassary work.

however as you stated alaric came straight out with a greeting and a hand shake after the description of the problem the bikes wizzed straight into the workshop:cool: problems confirmed and action taken:cool:

i would say that the reason the rear disk was shagged was because the rear wheal had so much play that under braking the play caused pressure on the disk that its not usually asked to deal with

once again south london mottorrad have proved they are a main dealer that offers premier service to their customers and once again they have gone the whole hog and fought your corner with BMW:cool:

and if im ever crazy enough to buy a 1200:eek i will get one there:thumb

Glad to hear of such good service ,shame the bikes seem to be so poorly made and they have not manage to sort the rear drive problems out which go all the way back to the early K's.

The 4th one on the same bike??

I would hope that they would explore the possibilities of a possible underlying problem as well.....can't really imagine what apart from something major that's mis-aligned, but 4 FD's on the same bike seems rather beyond coincidence:(

Not trying to worry you, but If it was mine, I'd at the least be asking the questions I think :comfort

Good on SLM though :thumb2

as far as im aware they are going to give the bike a good looking over, so it will be interesting to see their findings:thumb2

Service ?

Bummer that you had to go there in the first place - but what a result !!

Thought my prayers had been answered with a fairly local dealer just opening up (along with my wallet) here on the coast. You'd thought that a mechanically incompetent local with 3B's in the garage might have switched something on between their ears. Recently left their "Service Department" almost twice as light as the quote with not so much as a 'have a nice day' and feeling as if they were just taking the p##ss.

Got home to find one of their nice glossy mailouts in the box. Instead of spending all that money on glossy useless marketing why don't they spend a little of that budget on customer training.
Rule 1 of customer training - it take 10x the effort to get a new client as it takes to keep an existing one.

Aaaaaahhhhh - feel much better now :bounce1

You're not the first to pass comment on SLM and alaric's genuine enthusiasm.
Might just be the excuse I need for a little trip into the big smoke.

:( I haven't picked mine up yet, that will be on Sunday and after all I have read on this site I'm starting to think I've made a mistake. There seems to be more posts about things breaking than anything else.

I am trading in a Triumph which I have had for 6 years and in all the years I have owned it the only think to have gone wrong is a blown brake light bulb.

I have owned bikes in the past that I have lost confindence in while owning them but never before I even pick it up from the showroom - Jeeeeez H I hope mines not a lemon

:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Don't fret.
There will always be more posts about bikes breaking - this is the nature of web forums - no one posts to say "my bike's working fine I don't need any advice". So you see a distorted view of reality.

They've sold a zillion 1200's and realistically very, very few break. Buy it, ride it and if you're very unlucky fix it - I assume you're buying new, which makes it even less of a problem - warranties are great :thumb2

Not many people post up to say how faultless their bike is, but most feel the need to post up when it has issues.

Just ride it and enjoy it. Let BMW worry if it goes wrong. That's what a warranty is for. :comfort
