Hi all, When I bought my TC around four and a half years ago I was told that it’d be serviced before I picked it up ........ and why should I doubt that ....... right? I’ve only done around 5,000 miles whilst I’ve owned it and I’ve changed the oil regularly, maybe every 6 months
I decided to change the air filter so I got an original Mahle one and on taking the old one out today I noticed it was a bit black - it’s never been changed from new! 😳
It had a date of September 2009 on it
I thought I should confess and ask for forgiveness

all air filters get dirty, 12k is too long even on a car with a massive filter, the one on a GS is doing 4 times the work because its so small. I can imagine it was never changed as the owner couldn't find it

if used in major dirty cities full of tyre particles and diesel filth (London) or on dirt roads it should be much shorter

if servicing seems to be dubious, then I be checking up on missing recalls - although this must be noted is an opportunity for the dealer to check the brake fluid changes on their records and when outside spec they deliberately set the diagnostic to run the ABS brake pump to failure - but of course the world isn't that sick and I made it up !!!

Maybe post photo of air filter

Oil changes not necessary that frequently

But do change FD oil frequently (I do 5k ish) and also brake fluid to keep system good condition (2 yr max)

I did the final drive oil at 12,000 and the brake fluid around 18 months ago. I had a recall just after I got the bike for a rear wheel flange.how can I check to see if all recalls have been done?

Wouldn’t any outstanding recalls have been mentioned on the official BMW letter with the rear wheel flange recall?

no

I've had 5 separate recalls on mine, never once mentioned any others, no dealer has ever mentioned or confirmed its up to date

I bought the bike with 9,000 miles on it and presumed it would have been covered in a BMW service before that?

Hence why your air filter is the original. As I said previously, answering your original query, it’s scheduled for change 12k miles, unless used in dusty sandy conditions (rarely encountered in our damp moist climate :D )

Don't count on it.
I took my first GS for a 36k Service at a BMW Dealership, thinking it was the best way to go (we Live and Learn!!) and they "Forgot" all about changing the FD Oil.

on the 2005 to 2008 R1200GS rear bevel was never supposed to be changed.... they went back on that when high mile ones fell to bits.... now you hand over 300 quid in extra servicing and they fall to bits exactly the same as it would have anyway

This was on an 03 R1150GS.
According to the Schedule it was supposed to have been done.

i follow the original service schedule for the rear bevel box. In other words, oil has never been changed. Over 100,000km on it.
If you get a good bevel box, they go for ever. if you get a bad one, no amount of oil changes are going to stop the failures.

By changing and looking at the oil / residue, it can give an early warning of potential failure. Many high milage bikes (and some low milage) have had their rear drives rebuilt, so it seems there are few 'good' bevel box's out there. For the cost of 180ml of oil and a little time, it has to be worth changing.

It's very common if you look at bike ads on Ebay, for instance, for dealers to say that the bike will be 'serviced before pickup'.

I suspect that in many cases that means nothing more than an oil and filter change, and a look-over. It's hard to imagine the vendor doing a full front to back service at their own expense if they don't have to, so I think it's wise to ascertain exactly what work has been done.

the age of production has no bearing on how long its been in the bike... might have sat on a shelf for 8 years
the fact its black suggests it needed changing,

Really? You've done 100k miles on it and never changed the FD oil? Wow. Not sure I could wait that long. At the very least curiosity would have gotten the better of me .

But having had one fail on me (admittedly that was in an 1150 - different animal all together) I'll always change the oil just to ascertain how is behaving in there...

Never changed the oil in the rear diff of any car I have ever owned either, 1 with 650,000 miles on it. Car diffs have far greater loadings on them. Oil change requirements only came about because BMW got something wrong in manugfacture or assembly process and it became an ass covering process.

I think its more another opportunity to fleece cash out of some mug.... it basically does nothing so why would it need doing every 12k, 40k would be early

the real issue is designed to fail build quality, it's been endemic in the german car and bikes game for 15 years, use plastic bearings and gears made of plasticine that have the appearance of metal for 5 years.... you've got to get them off the road faster.... so the factory can keep making the things that generate the real cash...
