air filter - standard or peformance filter better?

Hi,
I bought my R1100GS off a guy who had had it dyno'd and he claimed a K and N air filter made no difference at all but that a full system Remus gave it 5 bhp extra

I replaced my filter for a pipercross, not for any performace, because they are washable. As I expected there was no noticeable change in performace when I fitted it.

Just fitted one to my Skoda Octavia 2.0 PD and am getting an average of about 5mpg more.

a new clean filter will have a performance advantage over a dirty one, can't see how a "performance filter" increases power :nenau

the old one must have been really shitty!!

I tried a K&N on a VTR and found the mother of all holes in the power band - guess it needed jetting to find any benefit.

Theoretically a freer flowing filter should help produce more power - up to the limit of the injectors/software

I´m going for Pipercross aswell. Also have Motad cat replacement waiting for installation. That´s quite cheap comparing to Remus.

Hope to gain some more power.

The old one was a new genuine filter fitted by the garage at the service some 1000 miles before hand!

Yip, the opinion is a GS needs a bit more than a different filter to get it moving:augie K&N is popular but under harder conditions it is not supposed to be as good at filtering. Seach away and see the library of previous stuff...

PS I have a K&N for convenience but may refit standard.

thanks for feedback.
Like I asked, please chuck in your preferences!

I have uses the K&N before but in a car (Honda Civic VTi) and it was holey holey holey for power (awful) and noisy!

Std paper i reckon then, as there appears to be no benefit from what people have said so far? Apart from cleaning and not really needing to buy another one

And how "red" is the correct amount of oil:augie

You're deluding your self if you think you'll get improved performance from just fitting a different filter.

Even the so called benefits of cost of a K&N over a standard filter don't take into account the time spent cleaning and the cost of the cleaning fluid and the filter oil.

Just the initial purchase price means you'll have to cover 80K miles before the cost between the two evens out. And that doesn't take into account the K&N cleaning fluid and oil.

Plus i've seen too many K&N filters on bikes back from morocco that have shite downstream of the filter.

is that directed at me Steptoe?

I would guess not, probably directed at anyone who thinks a filter on its own will radically improve performance.

Steppers is generally a pretty straightforward kind of guy!

I have a K&N fitted, but have also fitted a full exhaust system and "power" chip" I think the exhaust probably makes the biggest difference to power whilst the chip smoothed the power curve and seemed to make the throttle response a bit crisper (though I may be trying to justify the expense here!) Couldn't really say on the filter as it was fitted at the same time as some other mod (y piece I think) and was recommended by the chip supplier.

Overall I would say that performance is now pretty good, had no problems giving away 300cc on a trip this summer, but then again never made a trip without some sort of mod.

I think he is directing it at the general marketing for these products which is usually along the lines "increased airflow, increased performance", an easy selling pitch but one that has been debated about for ages.

It's the old "if it feels faster to you sir then it must be" debate. My extra 2p is that I cleaned my throttle bodies this weekend and I found some greasy shite that was not just carbon and some possible minor pitting in the alloy on the faster bit of the venturi. It COULD be tiny particles in the airstream, it may not...

I think Steptoe is including his own personal experience on his ADV with K&N as mentioned before.:thumb

Service kit for i.e K&N costs little more than 10€. 16 here in Finland. That can´t be any reason for anyone not to buy it. And it lasts longer than your BMW. Smiley.

Surely there´s no significant increase of power but in my mind it counts that i don´t have to buy new filter in every change. Green values you know.
