Anyone done away with the paper type air filter on the F8 and found a foam/sponge replacement that's washable?

Any particular brand you could recommend for a long trip in the dust?

Cheers

Long trip in the dust... maybe foam filter / pre-filter?

Uni Filter do them (i think we can use but amend the 1200 one on our bikes) but i'm sure there are other brands. Have a look on ADV for hours and hours of arguments!

To answer your actual wuestion, I've got a Uni foam filter, it comes with 2 little foam pre-filter blocks. I think I got them direct from the US, they were very helpful. They come dry so you'll need the oil, which you can get off eBay (that's where I got mine). I also have the long prefilter socks that go up the inside of the air intakes. These long pre-filters you can get from Touratech and are pre-oiled but apparently these may require some 'modification' to fit. I bought my foam filter for a trip last year expecting heavy dust but I didn't do that particular part in the end so I'm saving them for when I do need them. Like dome of the responses sk far I'm also currently using the K&N filter which is great: washable with the cleaner and then reapply the oil. This gives you better air flow than paper, theoretically less filtration but I've not noticed anything untoward in 61k miles. Obviously the foam gives even better air flow but even less filtration but is easier to clean and reapply in dusty conditions.

Apart from pricing and dollars spent, why would you use the aftermarket filters that are going to flow more air into an already lean running motor?
Just curious.

It's not really about more air perse, it's about being able to take them out regularly to clean them when they get clogged up in dusty conditions. Foam filters are easy to clean with a weak petrol and water mix, re-oil and refit.

Thank you to all :beerjug:

Appreciate the input and like those pre-filter thingies.

I carried a spare filter on my trip to Morrocco and used it after 4 weeks. As a spare the filter is bulky and takes up space. Do not want to carry another again.

A washable option is the way forward in my view.

Cheers
