The rubber elbows inside the airbox…… are they essential? What is their purpose? Can I just not bother refitting them?

Thanks

They form part of the seal between the metal sleeves, the angled elbows and the alloy part of the box but I’m sure that they’re there to help dampen the induction noise. On my old ST I converted the airbox to the old full alloy version for the looks. The induction noise on the ‘old’ version was noticeable.
Ps. I still have the complete conversion.

The rubber elbows in my airbox have little plastic vanes inside.

Do they have a function ?

Make the incoming air spin to promote an efficient mixture ?

Complete guesses - sorry

I do know they’re very fiddly to pull apart and reassemble 😉

Watched a video of a chap who converted his R100CS to the alloy version. Something I would like to do in the future.

IMHO, if you omit the rubber tubes and the plastic finned items, you will end up with an airbox heavily contaminated of oil from the breather. The purpose of the parts is to get the breather in the airflow for each cylinder. So it's all about the breather. Did I say breather enough?

On one bike I discovered a split in the breather hose prior to them entering the rubber tubes. The air filter box was covered in oil, inside and out, which was leaking all over the gearbox.

Thanks Tim.
I did wonder If they were mainly to hold the breather parts into the air intake tubes….
Will refit, even though I do think they are a faff to fit, and don’t really do much

complete novice question

Air filter Mahle LX 56 ( supplied by Motorworks ) seems to be just a bit too big to fit in housing.

anyone please ?

All the ones I've fitted have been fine (twice just in this week). These filters can be fiddly to fit you have your bike the wrong way round or upside down. Also if the starter cover is not removed. These are the 'rookie errors'. Keep trying and it will all go in neatly.

Should have note on side which shows which way up it goes…… and this writing goes to the front of the bike.
I always fit them from the left side…..don’t know why, but I do.
Wriggle it a bit and it fits (sometimes needs a small persuasion with a knocking stick)

Probably find that Mahle make the OE filters…..
