My basic has an HPN sump with extra plate fitted.
I quite like the idea of something a bit more substantial, what are the options?

It may not be an option with your bike Trippy unless the boxer supplies guard will clear the front of yours. The bash plate on yours is actually the bottom of the sump?

Of course I may put myself out and swap the hopelessly impractical extended sump fitted to your bike for my standard one :augie

Thats the one. I just fancy something extra there before hitting ten bales of sh*t out of it on rocks, I'l ring and ask about the Boxer supplies one.

One thing that confuses me is the extension to the oil pickup on larger pans like the HPN one. Is it there to improve the oil pickup as it's going to be deeper in oil and so reduce cavitation problems?

Apoligies for the hijack.

I ,,, alas am only a Meer Mortal , and have belmish amany and ask for
Guideance.

My thoughts on the Bigger sump / pick up is simply more oil will run cooler ?.
But you have a thermo operated hrad on the Basic , so is the two better than one ,
or is , either or sufficent to keep the oil cooler ?.

Or am i off on another ?.

Standard or even slightly moded suspension is poor over rough ground to say the least if you try to ride it even slightly brisk compared to modern bikes...Therefore i have keept the standard setup on my basic and ride it within it's limits with no problems whatsoever and it's seen loads of off roading
But on my well modified airhead it's a different story....
That theing gets ridden fast over rough ground..
I have left a sump gaurd off the bike to keep the ground clearance up...I use a standard r100 sump cuz there as cheap as chips to get secondhand...
It has seen a a lot of knocks and has proved to be fairly tough....But i did manage to trash it :blast
It took a massive impact mind you so i have replaced it with the same again because i don't think a bash plate would have saved it

Yes I guess that is sound advice and good to know that even the standard one can take a beating.

If I was going to put the sump distance piece on I would go fore this one:

Then you could raise the engine up a bit, (35mm I think), using:

Then you would have to modify the bash plate to accommodate the filter and the changing thereof, and I would frame mount it somehow:

'Course, then having raised the motor their would be all sorts of issues with the angle of the driveshaft on full extention and that might be a big bag of worms....

Good way to spend any spare cash you might have though;)

From what I've read, the deep sump doesn't make much difference on the oil temperature, just means you have more of it and so it doesn't get worked as hard. Having a cooler can be a mixed blessing unless you have a thermostat, as in cold weather the oil may not get hot enough to boil of any emulsified oil.

Personally, I think the oil cooler on the crash bars looks a bit naff and vulnerable and I'd go for the deep sump over the cooler, but then I'm no off-road god, or have any aspirations to be one :o

guzzi do a sump extension for their old twins. it contains no more oil, it just lets the crank spin in free space unrestricted by the oil.

R1 owners need not fear guzzis with this performance enhancement :P

Hey up

I was also concerned about bustin summatt whilst oof the tarmac
came up with I cheap ( thats me) Idea

Tie both the engine bars with a brace
then undersling a ally sheet down and under sump
Never ever bust owt
ner overheated ( as some experts predicted )
Bars never went full around the pots either - and it did get dropped a few times

Overheating

I made this sump gaurd a while ago and had it on when i did some trails in Spain a few years ago
Bottom line is when climbing up long trails at 35 deg C
the bike overheated
Oil light would come on at idle with the sump gaurd on...
Removed the sump gaurd = no oil light

I guess you didn't try and fit a deeper sump to see if it was ok with the guard? My guess is that even if you had you would have still had the oil light coming on, just further up the hill.

There's very little ground clearance on a standard bike without reducing it by fitting a deeper sump...
I often just kiss the sump on rocks anyway....( hence fitting the bash plate )....
Bash plate is fine in the UK cuz it's cooler and there are no 1000 metre climbs off road :blast

Yeah I guess the locals might get a bit upset if you kept on going up and down Ben Nevis tourist path on the bike :(

Although you could cool the engine down with the snow that's usually on top
