I've just bought an Airoh S4 helmet and wanted to share my positive thoughts about it.
I own an original Arai Tour X which I bought around 2002, and initial impressions were very good. However I found it incredibly uncomfortable at the top of my ears, so much so that I had to sand away some of the foam to make it bearable. The other thing I found unbearable was that the peak vibrated and made an absolute racket at anything over 40 miles an hour.
It was time for a new helmet, so I thought Arai may have improved things with the Tour X3, so I bought one.........how wrong I was. The peak is even worse than the original Tour X. It vibrates more and makes a lot more noise. The comfort isn't improved either.....my ears still hurt.
I was really dissapointed with my new Tour X3, so decided to sell it on here after only a few hours use.
What to go for next I thought ?? Well why not try the Airoh S4 ?? It looks the same as the Arai Tour X and Shoei Hornet, and the peak has for 4attachment points and has ribs moulded into it, so it shouldn't vibrate as much.
So I ordered one over the internet for £98.99 delivered
I was imediately impressed with the quality and fit and finish of the Airoh. I couldn't see £190 more value in the Arai. (By the way I'm a Design Engineer for an Aerospace company who specialise in composites, we design and build aircraft, and also make fast jet pilot helmets) .....so I should know just a little bit about these things.
The exterior of the helmet is very well finished, so too is the lining. The visor is a thick as the Arais', and it's optically clear, there is absolutely no distortion. It fits very well, and snaps nicely closed.
The two things that impressed me most about the Airoh are the comfort, and the lack of noise. I wore the helmet today for 4 hours, and noticed no hot spots any where, my ears felt great !! compared to the Arai for noise, the Airoh wins hands down, the peak does not vibrate at all, and there is no whistling from air vents etc.
The only complaint, and it's a very small complaint, is the Airoh is just a little bit drafty. The chin vents are permanently open, and the chin guard is longer than on the Arai, so you get a bit more fresh air on your face. This isn't a problem to me, as I don't ride during the winter. However during my ride this morning over the North Yorks Moors, it dropped down to 3.5 degrees and it was pissing down.....and the Airoh felt comfortable.
Summing up, I would really recomend the Airoh, I find it a better lid than the Arai. I've read all the reviews on here about the Airoh, saying it's not a patch on the Arai, and if you've only get a £100 head, buy a £100 helmet bollocks. My advice, if you've got a Tour X and can't live with the noise, try the Airoh, you won't regret it.
Cheers
