I've just bought an Airoh S4 helmet and wanted to share my positive thoughts about it.

I own an original Arai Tour X which I bought around 2002, and initial impressions were very good. However I found it incredibly uncomfortable at the top of my ears, so much so that I had to sand away some of the foam to make it bearable. The other thing I found unbearable was that the peak vibrated and made an absolute racket at anything over 40 miles an hour.

It was time for a new helmet, so I thought Arai may have improved things with the Tour X3, so I bought one.........how wrong I was. The peak is even worse than the original Tour X. It vibrates more and makes a lot more noise. The comfort isn't improved either.....my ears still hurt.

I was really dissapointed with my new Tour X3, so decided to sell it on here after only a few hours use.

What to go for next I thought ?? Well why not try the Airoh S4 ?? It looks the same as the Arai Tour X and Shoei Hornet, and the peak has for 4attachment points and has ribs moulded into it, so it shouldn't vibrate as much.

So I ordered one over the internet for £98.99 delivered :)

I was imediately impressed with the quality and fit and finish of the Airoh. I couldn't see £190 more value in the Arai. (By the way I'm a Design Engineer for an Aerospace company who specialise in composites, we design and build aircraft, and also make fast jet pilot helmets) .....so I should know just a little bit about these things.

The exterior of the helmet is very well finished, so too is the lining. The visor is a thick as the Arais', and it's optically clear, there is absolutely no distortion. It fits very well, and snaps nicely closed.

The two things that impressed me most about the Airoh are the comfort, and the lack of noise. I wore the helmet today for 4 hours, and noticed no hot spots any where, my ears felt great !! compared to the Arai for noise, the Airoh wins hands down, the peak does not vibrate at all, and there is no whistling from air vents etc.

The only complaint, and it's a very small complaint, is the Airoh is just a little bit drafty. The chin vents are permanently open, and the chin guard is longer than on the Arai, so you get a bit more fresh air on your face. This isn't a problem to me, as I don't ride during the winter. However during my ride this morning over the North Yorks Moors, it dropped down to 3.5 degrees and it was pissing down.....and the Airoh felt comfortable.

Summing up, I would really recomend the Airoh, I find it a better lid than the Arai. I've read all the reviews on here about the Airoh, saying it's not a patch on the Arai, and if you've only get a £100 head, buy a £100 helmet bollocks. My advice, if you've got a Tour X and can't live with the noise, try the Airoh, you won't regret it.

Cheers

Yep

I think the Airoh are really good lids,iv been wearing the mattise for a couple of years, excellent flip up lid, dark inner visor thats thick and doesnt vibrate,my mate wears the S4 and loves it.......

I've been considering a Tour X for a while, but this looks interesting. Any thoughts on the crash protection side of things? Is it likely to hold together well in a comparitive speed crash, alongside more expensive models?

funnily, i have the same lid as this Ogmiosis person :D
and i had a Tour X before that too.
I agree with all points above. :thumb2
It's lighter too, more stable at high speed, you can look to the sides / rear without it trying to tear your head off. - just pushes INto your face a wee bit. i've covered the front chin vents temporarily with tape until i get a new mic cover as it did keep switching the vox on. minor niggle / easy cured.

apart from that it's way better for me and my shaped head than the Tour X was.

No worries, it does hold together quite well in a crash. Speaking from experience:blast

Tossland

He wears Airoh and his heads still in one piece, and shit that boy sure knows how to crash test those lids.......

What are they like in the rain,

Leaks?
And is there a suitable fog city or pinlock that will fit this lid?

Cheers

Good, I was in a torential rain shower on Monday, and the only place water got in strangely was up the chin guard, because it's so long. Sort of a vortex effect whilst moving.

I bought an S4 about 3 weeks ago now, very impressed especially after riding down to Swansea and back. Good value for the money. Not worn it in the rain yet but this weekend I might find that out.

Anybody seen a pinlock for the Airoh S4?

Living in Scotland and riding all year I can't believe that the visor will stay mist-free without pinlock or is there something else around taht will be as good?

I'm looking for a shop which has these in where I can go and try one on... preferably somewhere between Watford and Durham...

Teesside Leathers on Northgate in Darlington used to stock them I think, worth a try

I've had an S4 for years right from when they first came out. Cheap and cheerful, not good in wet weather as will mist like you haven't seen before. Seal around bottom of visor is crap and an whistle.

But ... comfortable, light weight and a throw away money.

Ended up keeping mine. :thumb2

As I'm still waiting for a new pinlock for my System 5 and the old one is badly scratched I decided to buy an Airoh S4 as a summer helmet.

It seems very well made but I'm not looking forward to rain as there doesn't seem to be a proper seal around the top of the visor. As someone has already said as well a lot of air comes under the chin guard and through the chin vents so I'm expecting a lot of water ingress that way as well.

It has to be exceptional value for money though, it seems very well made with excellent paint finish and only £125. The Sys5 pinlock visor is £70 on its own!
