Why the feck does anybody hand over their car keys when parking at an airport?

Tales of woe are plentiful (as reported by the Consumer Association this month):

  • A passenger on a late returning flight was told at midnight that they couldn't have their car until 6am or take a cab to collect it. They found their car on a drive in a residential street.
  • Collection agents not turning up to collect the car causing missed flights.
  • The CA booked three cars with 'meet and greet' parking companies. The cars were fitted with GPS trackers. Several incidents of speeding; multiple movements of cars; a £60k Range Rover 'parked' in an abandoned rectory; another left on waste ground.
  • Theft of loose change.
  • Drivers helping themselves to bottled water and sweets left in the car.
  • Cars parked in muddy fields
  • Joyriding of cars
  • Damaged cars

Beats me. I usually try and use the train getting to the airport.

I remember being surprised’ when I went to Gatwick with a mate some years ago in his £120,000 Range Rover. Yep, pulled up, gave his reference number and keys to someone and we walked off….

Never tried it, my cars worth about £8k

If i owned an £120k car i could afford a taxi to the airport and leave the car safe at home in the garage!

I either use a taxi or hire a car if I’ve got my normal two large bags plus carry on. If it’s only a short trip with carry on bag then I catch the train straight to Manchester airport.
