2012 GSA, whats the verdict , I understand its easier to remove it when can is new, so interested in any experience please.

Is it no longer "street legal" then if i remove it ?

Is there any power performance gains in removing ?

Is it too loud ?

Thanks :hide

Baffle out on mine, lots of lovely noise to upset anyone.:D Only downside is if SWMBO is outside, she can hear me coming up the road about a mile away:blast:D

Baffle defo OUT! the GS has one of the must feeble and insiped exhaust notes I have every heard. I have the baffle out on mine and it still sounds like a wet fart, an 1170 cc engine with a 250 cc exaust note its an embarassment... only my opinion tho':D

Try for yourself, as said it's easy to do. I keep mine in because I like a quiet life but it's up to you. There isn't any performance gain either way.

its a small cap head bolt to remove the baffle.Very easy to remove.Baffle out on mine, why else fit a akrapovic :nenau

+1

Its an Akra so after spending all that bread i'd want to hear im getting value for money :D

Whatever you fancy. I had an Akrapovic on my 2008 and rode with it out, very loud.
Generally out will give better performance, however this is a massive generalisation and the only way to know is test it on a dyno.
I wouldn't worry about noise and the police, I have never known anyone to get stuck on. It tends to get mentioned when they stop you for riding like a wally, it is in my experience never the reason to stop the vehicle.

It really depends on you, the only word of warning I would give is if you are rather enthusiastic the extra noise may draw attention to what you are doing.

However GS riders are not exactly traffic police public enemy number one. A well ridden GS might get stopped for words of advice, the GSX-R with the letterbox plate etc will attract the attention we all wish to avoid.

I loved the noise with the baffle out on the Akra (also with straight through headers) but found the bike just kept stalling at low revs. Put the baffle back in and no problems anymore so I'm keeping it that way. The decatted headers make quite a difference to noise output anyway and even with the standard can its quite "fruity".

Definitely out :thumb
Loud saves your life and others :)

On a twin cam with standard headers there is very little difference in noise volume with the baffle in or out - I would say it has zero impact on performance or drivability.

With it out you get a slightly deeper sound - so I run mine without for that reason :thumb

I would agree with that on the single cam's to. It needs the decatted headers to make any real difference to both performance and noise. I think you also have to consider how lean the engines are running so with decatted headers as well you may wish to consider remapping or other options.

Spot on there. Any performance gain comes from the decatted headers and not from a can. Any perceived performance gain from just removing the baffle from an end can is negligable at best.

In my experience, the boxer engine doesn't like straight through systems without having the fuelling altered. My system has minimal baffling and without the PC3 it runs like a bag of nails. hewever, with the PC3 and proper fuelling it rides beaurifully and pulls like a train:thumb

Ive just fitted a used Akraprovic titanium twin can "race" system (2-1-2). It had no effect on engine running that I could detect though I will be going for a remap to avoid cooking the valves.

Noise? To be honest, the BOOORRR got a bit wearing so Ive put baffles in. They take the edge off but its still not quiet. But you dont buy an Akra for no noise.

Block up one can and its MUCH less noisy so I quite fancy a flap valve on one can to get best of both worlds. But that's more complication so its baffles for now.

In short, let your ears decide.

But I suggest if you remove it, you keep it on the bike. I found I had the baffle out for short journeys, around town and scaring the sh*t out of pedestrians.

But on long journeys, even with earplugs, I found the noise & drone of baffle-out too much, and would bung it back in.

It can be a tight fit, so when refitting it, don't be tempted to skip putting the retaining screw in. I did this once, and on overrun, the baffle popped out and rolled down the road !

Enjoy !

my 2012 came with free akra can. TBH its quiet next to baffle in cans on many other bikes even with the cap out. The cat and exhaust valve must be blocking a lot of noise. Like on my fazer 1000 with its exup valve.
I would like to decat and junk the exhaust valve, but am worried about warranty issues for a start, plus there dont seem much about it on the forum, so does anybody do it ??
On the motorway it does sound a bit like a droning heinkel at big speeds, but its nowt like an aprilia falco I had with open cans. ( the akra is straight through ! )...that used to wake up the dead ! :rob

I'M GOING WITH THIS

Fitted today , sounds a bit fruitier with the baffle out so I'm going to try that, as windy recomends i'm going to carry the baffle around on the bike for the moment. Thanks for all the feedback , very useful.:beerjug:

I'm guessing here but me thinks you might have some warranty issues with replacement headers, ie if you cooked the valves say. The benefit of the AKRA slip on is that BMW offer it as an approved accessory.
From what Ive read what you fancy doing in practice is very common but the important bit i picked up was you really need to include a power commander in the set up or get the ecu remapped. :hide

Yeah that's what I did with mine - I had the Akra on the standard headers and then when warranty was finished I fitted the open headers. To start with I had an Accelerator Module fitted for the fueling but replaced that with the Wunderlich Fuel Controller which is a belt & braces method of richening up the fuel mixture. I'm still considering the full remap.
