Alan Cathcart's Stelvio review

You're welcome.(y) Are you considering one?

Thanks for that Clifton. I can't bloody wait to get my hands on one! No clear delivery date for the UK yet. Hopefully within the next month. Not sure how the TFT obscured his vision though, especially as there is a sat nav mount rail above it.

Thanks for sharing, it sounds pretty good.

Likewise I don’t quite get the fuss about the obtrusive display

That's a great review, nice guy is Alan Cathcart, thanks for posting it Clifton

Thanks for the link @Clifton

Sir Alan talks highly of the quality of finish on the new Stelvio, which is good news as there have been a few reports of poor & mismatched paint on some Mandellos. Not the tupperware, which is usually excellent, but the engine, gearbox & FD castings.

I have yet to see a Stelvio in the flesh, so I can't draw any conclusions. An old mate has a Mandello S & loves it, so I was thinking do I wait for the Stelvio S to land, or am I better to go with the Yamaha Tracer GT+ which ticks all the boxes for me, is tried, tested & readily available. The GT+ shows MG & BMW radar can be neatly integrated - BMW can't even manage to fit a proper rear light on the R1300GS; I have yet to understand how that passed the approval process.

I hadn't noticed the display in the way of my line of sight either but I'll consciously look at that next time I take it out. I do feel anything attached to the bar above the display is going to obstruct more than I want so I didn't even consider mounting the Garmin there.

One thing he mentioned (that I didn't) was the lack of driveline play or snatchiness but I noticed that right away on this bike. I just assumed I lucked into one that had close tolerances which minimized the stacking effect. Apparently the gearbox and driveshaft are manufactured pretty tight.

Alan mentioned the suspension as being good. I agree on smooth roads, but I feel the rear is pretty harsh on rougher pavement and potholed gravel roads. There is no compression adjustment so I don't see how the harshness can be reduced and increasing preload a bit didn't help, so it has to be in the shock. I'll give it 1,500 miles or so to break in before deciding if I want to upgrade it. My Tenere 700 had the same problem (F&R) even after backing out the compression adjustments, but by 1,500 miles or so I noticed they were working much better. The Stelvio's forks seem to do better in this regard than the shock. Thinking back I believe the V85TT was pretty firm early on too.

Good report that and on my list of test rides when I think about replacing my Honda ATAS the 21 inch front wheel does compromise road handling a bit and I rarely take it offroad. My 22 year old R1150GS has better road handling!!

I would love to have a Stelvio, but I bought a Tracer 9 GT+ and it is a cracking bike!
