Had a Meta alarm fitted yesterday. On the way home tonight, rev counter died to the pin, bike still running fine. Carried on, assuming minor fault, get it done under warranty. Got home, thought, just try switching it off, then restart again, might clear fault. Switched off, back on again, all the correct lights came on, fuel pump whirrs etc, press starter button, nothing! No click, whirr, nothing. Tried to switch alarm on/off, no response from alarm. With ignition off, the LED flashes slowly for 4 or 5 minutes, then goes off, with ignition on, LED is goes off. Chicken and egg deal now, has the revcounter fault triggered an error in the alarm, or has the alarm or it's installation failed and caused the revcounter fault. Certainly appears the alarm is immobilising the starter circuit. Wish I hadn't bloody bothered! , I'd ring BMW recovery(bikes only 8 weeks old) but they're likely to blame the alarm.Anyone any ideas:confused:

Tony,

your symptoms (once you were home) sound like the immobiliser is working (ie is armed).

You should've got 2 alarm keys (plippers) with the alarm - have you tried both of them?

Read the alarm manual. There is a way of turning the ignititon on and off in sequence to disable the alarm IIRC (can't remember where the manual is or I'd have a look).

If you get no joy with either/both plippers or the manual, you're probably going to need help...

If you got the mobile Meta bloke to fit the alarm, he'd be the guy I'd call first to rectify it. If it was fitted by your dealer (as mine was), I'd just call them & tell them to collect it & fix it.

HTH

Mike:)

ps How'd it go at work today

contact alarm installer

It sounds like an alarm fault. Contact the installer. Who did you use? I am onto second meta...very impressed and bikealarms.co.uk fitted it. The installer is responsible for getting it right and if unit is faulty they will replace it.

worth having for peice of mind.

Alarm yes .Imob no way pedro

Sorry I know this aint gona help much but my 1100gs spyball imoboliser kicked in on its own for no reason and would not clear RAC man and i discoverd the main control box was positioned between the tank and under the front seat consiqwently any rain water would run directly off the back of the tank and into the box wich was (no suprises here )full of water previous to this the bike was running like s*it took it to a nice friend of mine and he stripped the offending article out in 10 mins and bined it 1 of the best things i ever did bike then run much better. same thing happend to my 2001 1150gs that also got binned 2 things resulted from this 1. when i fill up with gas i return to bike put key in start up and ride off no messing with plip . 2 main controll box is in bin and not in tool compartment so now ave room for tools . if any body follows this advice tell your ins comp and bye a BIG LOCK ..Dog :D

Tony

Did you break a mirror or something at the start of the year? You seem to be experiencing a disproportionate amount of bad luck.

Still, if you work on the theory that they come in three's you can count the alarm as the third and look forward to a brighter future... unless you did break a mirror inwhich case you only have six years to go :D

On the alarm front I would say it has to be the alarm unit rather than the bike itself and first point of contact would be the installer. I don't suppose you have any warranty on the alarm unit itself though if you picked it up secondhand.

Let us know the outcome.

Adam

P.S. When do you get the result on your first bit of bad luck?

P.P.S. It could be worse, you could have Stephen B's bike. He reckons the only original parts left on his bike are the wheels, forks and battery - everything else has been repaired/replaced under warranty!

You're right Adam, I was quite relieved when the alarm failed , as the car broke down on Wednesday, nearly got the sack on Thursday and the alarm went on Friday! alarm turned out to be the main unit buggered, Nick Beale, who did the installation, came from Gloucester to here within an hour of me calling, diagnosed the fault, put me in touch with someone who had removed an identical unit on an R6 he is prepping for racing. He let me have it for £20! I'm quite looking forward to next week!
I'm still waiting to hear on the speeding rap, it was mid July when I was pulled, so they've got another couple of months to go yet, I'm expecting the summons anytime now!
BTW anyone looking for cracking service re alarm fitting etc, Nick Beale is on 07980 760073

Have to agree. I posted similar comments some months ago. I do know some of you have no choice but to fit these bloody things, however if you have a choice dont. I had a 'quality' immobiliser cut in at 100+ some years ago on a zx10. Had a similar experience on zxr at le mans.
I binned both. They are bloody dangerous on bikes.
