Reading your post made me feel good. I've got a Spyball Patriot AM/8510 on mine !! And it threw a wobbly last summer which I was able to right myself by reprogramming on-the-spot. It was "thrown" by a bloody Ford Escort Cabrio alarm parked next to my bike - weird or what ?

Let me know how you get on as this could be directly relevant to me too. Bloody alarms.

Alarming closure

Thanks for all your input folks.
My man "Bruce" fitted a Datatool 3 this morning, removing and splicing into the old system. He offered the Datatool and Meta at the same price and although he fits both about 50/50, personally recommended the Datatool as being more resilient for GS style riding ie water, vibration, additional features, etc. Both carry a 3 year warranty.
Spyball are apparently still in existence in Italy and are about to promote a new alarm in this country. The Spyball apparently suffered from a number of problems including moisture ingress and the new alarm is designed and built by the same team of people? Although the "spyball" technology is apparently innovative and has been imitated by Datatool and the like, the bits that go with it let it down.
Bruce and his partners trade as "Safe'N Sound" and cover a very wide radius from Hemel Hempstead, fitting alarms for many bike dealers in London and the Home Counties and as far, far North as Peterborough.

all alarms are crap - period.

If they want your bike, they will have it. Nobody will bat an eyelid as it screams for help !

I've had Datatools and Spyballs and others. The Datatools immobiliser cut in at 110+ on a ZX10. I had a Spyball immobiliser refuse to disengage on a ZXR750 just as we were leaving Le Mans to catch the ferry.

Any electrical probs with your bike ? You will need to eliminate the alarm first.

Its a comfort blanket that does not work.

Whereas I agree to a great extent with what you say, Phil, some people have no option but to fit them or they just can't get insurance. It also means that it may alert you if you park it within earshot.....

Take you're point about being in earshot Mike..but it seems the immobiliser is the main requirement of the insurance companies.

Riding a bike has enough risks without these bloody things lurking in the loom.

I have the 1100gs and an old and decrepit xtx750 insured with Carole Nash for sub £200. They offered a 5% discount for an approved alarm. It didn't even make financial sense.

Maybe those guys and gals who have difficulties with insurers requiring expensive over complicated alarm systems should shop around ?

Meta

Just upgraded my F650GSGD to 1150GS and the local BMW shop wanted £350 to move my Meta from the old bike to the new ! a new Meta is £320 !
I'm having it removed and refitted for £130 by the Meta approved installer for the area. I'll let you know if I get any probs.
It never gave me any probs in the old bike.

just a thought !!
but i have datatag and datadots on me adv
and later fitted a datatool alarm immob i phoned up the insurance to claim me extra discount only to find a saving of a fiver on me premium ,? as they believe datatag is the dogs dooda's..and it qualifyed for the max discount .....
my conversation with the teleop was rather odd as i could not understand how a alarm immob system costing 300 notes is inferior to a 50 quid fit it yerself kit!! , still i got the satisfaction of having a bit more security.......
