If you’re not alarmed you will be after you read this!!
In an attempt to keep the scum bag element of our society at bay, I have just had a Datatool system three fitted to my R1150adv, I have used this particular system on previous bikes that I have owned but due to the fact that the alarm purchase has always been included in the total bike package the alarm system has until now been fitted at the dealers, on the last two occasions the work has been done at M&S motorcycles, at their Newcastle branch.
Unfortunately due to the fact that M&S were unable to supply my new BMW
I was forced to look to alternative means, it has to be said at this stage that I am more than a little bit sad at having to leave Ian and the boys, and the service that I have enjoyed for many years,
Anyway time to put your tissues away, and get back to the matter in question, WHO to choose to fit the new alarm.
After scouring the web I narrowed it down to one company, Peak Security Systems, Who I understand are based in the Leicester area, the local installations personnel that they put me in touch with was a chap by the name of Roy Collins, just as a matter of interest Roy , is the proprietor of Roy Collins Motorcycle security, and as luck has it here is his mobile number : write it on a bit of paper and do your self a favour and keep it in a safe place I guarantee you will not be disappointed 07778 149874.
The only thing left to say is TOP JOB, TOP MAN at reasonable rates,
Tradesmen of this standard are unfortunately a dying breed.
PS. NO we are not related

I was all signed up for a Datatool to be fitted but then three things came to my notice:

1. BMW's don't seem to get nicked on a regular basis.

2. Datatool is invasive to your wiring and they allow extra time to fit to the GS.

3. Too much unreliability. I read threads about more than one person being let down by the Datatool and it didn't fare too well in the recent 'RIDE' survey either.

South of France - sun out - long trip home in prospect - immobile bike due to duff alarm - NO THANKS!

Hmm, I used to have a datatool on my old Firestorm and my brother also used to have one on his 600 Thundercat.

It did give a big discount on insurance, (which was the main reason that I had it fitted, On yer Bike, just outside Aylesbury did mine) Although I'm sure that as alarm systems go this is a pretty good one, actually most of the time it proved to be a bit of a pain. All the extra wiring made it difficult to carry out simple maintenance tasks and the permanent beeping (which it must have to remind you it's disarmed) was nothing short of very annoying. Working on the bike without attracting a lot of attention to yourself (a key point in attracting thieves) was actually pretty difficult and if the bike was parked up for more than about a month, the battery would go flat.

I'm sure the guy who fitted yours was very good, as was mine I think but for me, unless the manufacturers introduce high quality alarms that are better incoporated into the design of the motorcycle from the ground up, then I will always prefer a decent lock and a lamp post.

I seem to agree with Ghoast Rider2, as I remember a poor sod brought to tears as he was about to set off on his holidays, luggage neatly packed Mrs. all ready to jump aboard and he could not get his bike to start, he was on the ferry justed docked in Calais all of Europe in front of him and he had to puch his bike off the boat, very sad. I'll stick to the Abus chain and disc lock.
Still good luck with your datatool
