Has anyone experienced an odd and sporadic change in the way their factory fitted alarm behaves? I have recently found that my alarm gives out three short beeps when set; but doesn't do this every time and there doesn't appear to be pattern to its behaviour. The alarm is programmed to not make any sounds when being set, but there is something that is getting it going. The reason for the question is that I am concerned, like many others here, that my battery is either faulty or just not being sufficiently charged and that this is why the alarm is behaving oddly. I have had the recent electrical software update which has improved quite a few things, but doesn't appear to have improved the ability of the battery to charge or start the bike up with enough ooomph! I understand from others who have posted stuff on this site that there have been a few battery issues with the 1200GS. I have asked the question of BMW Motorad and, as yet, have not received a reply to me query.

Chris

I think the manual for the alarm says that if you press the set alarm button again within fifteen seconds you will hear three short beeps indicating that the motion sensor is de-activated.

I have noticed a change in the factory-fitted Alarm since the update:

The alarm will only set if actioned within a very short while of turning off the ignition. Previously it could be actioned at any time, irrespective of ignition. Even if I want to reset the alarm after deactivating it, the ignition has to be turned on/off. Wasn't that way before the update.

Haven't noticed a 3-beep, only get the 2-beep when setting.

I noticed this alarm behaviour after the software update too.

I set the alarm to auto arm after turning the ignition off (you get around 25 seconds delay) You dont need the alarm fob to disarm (which is worn around my neck on a cord) as it will disarm when you insert the key and turn on the ignition.

...yep, thought it was just me imagining it - my alarm settings have changed slightly. When washing the bike I generally flick the alarm off, then press the arm button twice and this disables the motion detection. But it has now become very difficult to disable the motion detection.

Alarms

Two questions : do your insurance companies insist on an alarm or give you a lower premium, secondly does anyone take any notice if your alarm goes off and how long will it carry on for?

mine does something even stranger. If you switch off the alarm with the fob, then try to put it back you can't before you have actually turned on the ignition at least once.

I have been reading this thread trying to get some info on how these alarms are supposed to work. Previous owner didnt keep the manual!! Anyone know where I might be able to get a copy of the manual? Thanks

Not sure about your second question as mine hasn't been delivered yet, but according to a UK dealer I spoke to the BMW system isn't thatcham approved so I doubt it will get you a discount, hopefully he was wrong and someone will know better on here.

Sorry to tell you, but he is right the alarm is not Thatcham approved and therefore would not be eligible for an insurance discount. :(
