Well, it's that time of year again where I whisk away a group of intrepid tossers to an unforgettable trip to Alaska and The Yukon.

I know it's a dirty job but someone has to do it and it might as well be me.

I've got a full trip this year and some great people so it should be a lot of fun.

As usual, I'll do this as we go along and although it's impossible to do it daily, I'll update as often as I can and try and post some different pictures than usual but there will be a lot of stunning scenery pics which are unmissable.

I've done this a few times now and I've found the best way up to Anchorage is via Frankfurt. It's the only direct flight from Europe and shaves 6 or 7 hours off the day.

Early start up to Birmingham and as I joined the queue, the phone pinged with the words we all dread "flight cancelled". F***s sake and it turns out that climate twats have glued themselves to the runway and Franfurt and it's caused utter chaos. The group whatsapp is going bonkers as 5 people are flying out.

Lufthansa have cancelled their London and Birmingham flights but for some reason the Manchester flight took off a little late. I think the plane must have been overnighted in Manchester whereas us poor folk in Birmingham and London were waiting on aircraft coming over from the fatherland.

Bollox and double bollox as it's now going to be a freakin nightmare to get to Anchorage. If anyone has been ti Birmingham airport at 6.30 am you will now it's bedlam and the Lufthansa staff were reasonably helpful, didn't really know what was going on and just told us to go on the app and deal with the useless AI bot which was crap. After a couple of hours, I managed to pin down the right girl and using my charm and wit she managed to sort some other flight out which aren't ideal but better than nothing I guess.

So, I'm now flying tomorrow morning from Heathrow via Newark on United. The worst thing is the Newark/Anchorage leg will be 7.5 hours of abject torture as the US internal flight make Easyjet look comfortable.

Lufthansa to their credit arranged a taxi down to Heathrow and a night in the Holiday Inn as the flight is at 8.00am and 'er indoors would definitely not be getting up at 3.00 am to get me to the airport.

The driver of teh cab was called Iqbal and was good company going down to London. He used to be an insurance broker in Pakistan and was regaling me with some unbelievable stories of Pakistani insurance claims and outcomes !!

So here we are, a day behind already and although I hate not being up in Anchorage to meet everyone as they get in, it could be worse.

oh no, I always enjoy your trip reports and it's not the start I was expecting.

Hope things start to come together once you finally get on your way.

All the best laid plans etc. Looking forward to it Chris. (y)

Looking forward to this, thank you for taking the time to post.
Have a great trip and stay safe.

Not jealous in the slightest, hoping to get back next year. I know you'll have a great trip. Shame about Frankfurt, such a great route out/back normally.

Well this cnut and his mates can go f**k themselves as far as I'm concerned. c9a38864-45af-4428-be05-cc760677cfb6.JPG

Anyway, moving on and Lufthansa definitely did their job and put me in the Holiday Inn at Heathrow and even provided me with a food voucher........which was nice but I had to pay for the beer.

Up at 4-15am to catch the Hoppa round to the terminal for an 8.00 am flight. £6.80 for a 15 minute ride........

IMG_3862.jpg

Even then the fun wasn't over because Lufthansa had put my name down differently to my passport which caused the check in system to deny me a boarding pass. I had a small cry but the nice lady changed it for me at a 6ft 16st bloke threatening to have a breakdown would not look good......!!

Having negotiated that, I treated myself to a frankly excellent breakfast in T2 partially because I've flown United many times and experienced their cuisine!

IMG_3863.jpg

If anyone hasn't been to Heathrow, It's an ideal place to get your steps in and the gates tend to be miles away but was just what the doctor would have ordered after that plate of food.

IMG_3864.jpg

And onto the flight.

IMG_3865.jpg

It was full but I always like flying on the Boeing 767. Not a bad amount of room and they always seem to fly well.

Uneventful departure and I settled into the 8 hour flight to Newark

IMG_3866.jpg

Having never been into Newark, I was very surprised to see actually how much greenery is close to NYC.

IMG_3867.jpg

Nice approach in and a good view of the New York Skyline just over the river.

IMG_3870.jpg

The airport was very quiet thankfully and a very nice welcome for a change. For those who have travelled to the US, you will know how plain miserable immigration can be especially at the major hubs but they seem to have been on a charm offensive over the last few years and at least here, they are sticking to their pledge.

Now sitting in Newark waiting for my next 7.5 hour stint up to Anchorage. I've just noticed it will be on a 737 Max9 and as it's an internal flight, there will be f*ck all on it and it will make EasyJet seem comfortable.

Just off for a beer........

The connection to Anchorage meant a 4 hour wait but after catching up on some work, we board the new 737 Max 9 to be pleasantly surprised that is was quite roomy and had TV's in the seats so the flight turned out to be reasonably comfy.

Took off and got a good view of the real Statue of Liberty before heading west on the 7.5 hour internal flight.

It's easy to forget just how big this country was. A bit rough over Canada but after a bit of snoozing and a couple of movies we started our approach into Anchorage and the new map system they use is a mine of information.

Last off the plane and glad to be back on terra firma after nearly 16 hours in the air.

Thanks for posting. Your trip reports are always a good read. Have a safe journey.

Sorry to read of your shit start but I have no doubt the rest of the trip will be 5*.
We are ALL looking forward to seeing another great year.

Surely can't be any worse than that customs muppet back in 2012 who kept putting our bike import paperwork to the bottom of the pile because he didn't know how to process it and his ego wouldn't let him ask his supervisor. Still, only cost us 3 days and a fine "for incorrect paperwork" for daring to question them :)

So, better late than never I finally arrived in Anchorage and met up with the group in the airb&b.

We all went down to the rental company on Saturday to make sure the bikes were what they wanted. I and the rental company take a lot of pride in supplying the bike people wanted i.e with low seat, low chassis, sat nav etc etc. We are also happy to fit bits and bobs if people want them.

Everything in order so back to the digs for a night of prep.

It's a tradition to get breakfast at Gwennies at the start of the trip so we were on teh doorstep at 08.00 and as usual it doesn't disappoint.

Then it was off the pick the bikes up.

IMG_3911.jpg

So we headed off towards Seward in sunny but windy weather.

Always good to see the classic Alaska train at a stop by the Turnagain Arm penisular.

Quick stop at a great little cafe in Girdwood which is `Alaska's premier ski resort in the winter. Hard to believe they have around 35ft of snow here in the winter.

IMG_3920.jpg

We then headed across to the fishing port of Seward which is a thriving mix of commercial and sports fishing which has to be one of teh biggest industries up here.

IMG_3922.jpg
IMG_3923.jpg

We had a little walk around the harbour and came across a family who were cleaning their catch of god knows what from the Alaska depths!!

This thing was almost as big as the kid who caught it!!

Seward is a really lovely place and we rolled out just as it started raining.

IMG_3930.jpg

Then is was off to our motel in a cool little town called Moose Pass. Cracking old school type place which provided a great place to escape the deluge which had just started.

IMG_3931.jpg
IMG_3935.jpg

It was in a great location and right on the lake.
