Aldi SatNav next week

I think you'll find the "motorcycle" bit is just another set of speed options for routing purposes. GPS units use a "guestimate" of average speed for motorways, A roads, B roads etc to give you estimated journey time, and the average speeds for each road type will be different for truck, car, bike, cycle or walking. Some GPS units (depending on the maps they use) can also have different routes for cycles and walking because they can go up one-way streets, across parks etc. I'd guess this unit has only upped the estimated average speeds for bikes :)

In addition to waterproofedness (if that's a word), other things you should consider are how you'll mount it, how you'll hear the instructions, and how you'll operate it with gloves on. Not necessarily deal-killers - just need to be considered.

Thanks guys, so Garmin 2610 it is.

JC

just make sure it's got v8, v9 or v10 [if your very lucky] mapping and you will be fine.
if in doubt just ask somebody.:thumb

It's an Aldi satnav, how good do you think it's going to be? It might be alright as an entry level bit of kit for the car but I doubt it'll be bike friendly.
I use the Quest 1 and it's good enough for me, and it's waterproof, so good for the bike.

At that price you can't go wrong, £119 and a three year`warranty (compare that with a TomTom ONE I have just bought). OK, so it's not for a bike but compared to a 2610 it has up to date GPS chip set, traffic, european maps and I guess you can download POIs as well. I have a 2610 - good kit but a little dated.

Have a look on pocketgpsworld.com and see if there are any comments about it.

If buying a 2610 or similar off Ebay - get as much info about the seller as possible and find out if the keycodes have been used.

I bought one off Ebay, and everything was fine until I had to get help from Garmin in unlocking the maps (after losing the data on the CF card :o)- turned out the unit had been stolen in a housebreaking the previous year :blast

Unit is now a nice-sized door stop :tears
