The Sticks

Great Report

The stick you wonder about? I may have the answer. Were they in the Clyde perhaps? If so they well have been there to hold logs and wood for shipbuilding.

The shipbuilders would soak the wood and once it was nice and damp it could be bent and shaped and the dried.

As you ride along the Clyde from Erskine to Port Glasgow there are a number of site with similar sticks.

Great RR and pics Ray.
Heading north in a couple of weeks with some other 'tossers'.
Starting at Kinlochleven and then touring the North coastal area.
Your pictures, especially the panoramic ones, make me want to be there now.:thumb

Thanks.

Loch Linnhe, thats Onich o`er the water. Its just an old pier.
Your story is more interesting though :D

Thanks for the comments everyone. Glad you like the photos. I have been tweeking them in work the last few days, printing off the ones that I like the best. I printed the Applecross panoramic today, 43 inches wide. It looks amazing!:clap Now I ned to try and find a frame, or better yet buy a frame then print it to fit that!

I am due to leave Scotland in a couple of months though, being posted to a portsmouth based ship. This was my last opportunity to really see the place so I thought that I would make it a good one. Beween now and then I have a few courses to complete all over the country. I may be able to have a weekend trip somewhere but that will be about it. I am thinking of popping over to Mull for a look round. Any other suggestions for a weekend jaunt?

The bike will be heading south with me in August, so my next proper trip will probably be around the Portsmouth area. I have the bug now. I learnt loads of lessons on this trip which will definately help me on the next one.:thumb

Thanks for that, I do like to read a good ride report. I keep promising to write up my one from Germany, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech rRepublic from last year but only seem to remember at nearly midnight:rolleyes:

The trip you did was one I really want to do myself one day and the same as you I want to do it alone as sometimes you get so much more out of it. You don't need a big 1200 to enjoy yourself and on some of the smaller roads the smaller bikes are better (imho).

Hopefyully you'll be on another trip soon and writing it up:augie

Thanks Ray :thumb2
Sounds like you enjoyed a great trip.
Do you have the details about which campsites you used?

Really good pictures!!

I know some of those roads from a trip last year (sadly in a car) - wishing all the time I was on the bike instead...

BTW - what camera(s) did you use?

Do you have the details about which campsites you used?

At Eilean Donan Castle I stayed at the campsite at Ardelve. http://www.ardelvecaravanandcampingpark.co.uk/ It is literally 500 yards across the bridge from the castle.

At Applecross I stayed at the campsite that you reach as soon as you get to the bottom of the hill. I think it is the only one there. Had a great meal in their onsite bistro. And set off the next day with a bacon roll and a coffee.:D

In Ullapool I stayed at the Broomfield campsite. Bit windy facing the water though!

I got my photos at John o'groats, then headed south to Wick. I then followed the brown signs to the first campsite I could find. Nothing special though.

After reaching Aviemore I headed down the road to Rothiemurchus and stayed at Rothiemurchus Camp & Caravan park. Its a few miles back into town though, so after putting my tent up in the rain and finally changing into normal clothes the last thing I wanted to do was to go out in the rain again. Boil in the bag rations for me that night. Excellent facilities on the site though.

When I arrived at the Forth Road Bridge I tried a few campsites which were full due to the bank holiday weekend. I ended up over the water in Edinburgh at the Edinburgh Caravan Club Site. Excellent facilities but by far the most expensive place at £13.20 to camp for one night.

Th following day I had ridden through driving rain for about 3 hours and was getting a bit pissed off to be honest. After getting through Dumfries I decided that the VERY next sign I saw for a campsite was going to be where I stopped for the night. I found Barnsoul Farm which is just throght te village of Shawhead. http://www.barnsoulfarm.co.uk/ Pretty good facilities. They even have a basic kitchen that guests can use.

After all that I got back to base back to my own bed. Hope this helps.

Really good pictures!! BTW - what camera(s) did you use?

All but two of the photos were taken on my trusty Nikon D200 with the 18-135mm lens fitted. Its a few years old now but its a cracking bit of kit and fits quite nicely in my tankbag. The other two shots were taken on my Canon G9 which goes everywhere with me. Going away on a trip I will always have a backup camera. I have had one fail on me before which is a major pain. For both cameras I had 12v chargers so I could charge the batteries from the bike. Plus spare batteries, lens cleaning cloth, tripod and a bag full of memory cards. In work I use the Nikon D2X and Nikon D3 but they are a bit bulky to take away on the bike.

Excellent Ride Report and stunning pics

Really enjoyed that, it's clear you know what your doing with a camera...some stunning shots thanks:thumb
