Buy it - ride it - enjoy it ffs :clap

should read:

Buy it- ride it - lose all power - call BMW assist - wait - workshop - ride - electrics conk out - call BMW assist - wait - workshop - ride - spend 2 hours looking at roadside for lost top box - ride - fuel pump failure - call BMW assist - wait - workshop - wait - ride - battery failure - call BMW assist - wait - workshop - ride - gearbox failure - call BMW assist - wait - workshop - ride - clutch/gearbox failure - call BMW assist - workshop - ride- steering lock failure - call BMW assist - have warranty dispute - ride direct to Honda trade in - find out suspension and clutch knackered - workshop.

Nothing would please me more than buy-ride-enjoy.

However my 23 month old 1200GS with 11,500 miles on it is back in the workshop again!!!!!!!

Yes, machines are not infalliable, no disagreement.

However one should expect certain standards of reliability and build quality. The only machine I've owned which was more unreliable than the 1200GS was..

my prior 1200GS.

My charabanc car history of Metros, Renault 14, Peugeot 305 caused me less trouble, less breakdowns and less cost.

* and I had a lot of fun in the back of the Peugeot.....

I think it would be fair to say that many prefer the looks of the 1150, and the 1150 and 1100 before it were great bikes. But the 1200 is a progression, sure there are week points, and the weight saving may have come a the expence of battery life and possible rear frame strength, but its hard to loose 30kg and have no effect. Fact is the performance of the 1200 justifies the wieght loss. Add the increase in power and the result is a bike that at least for this 48 year old is very impressive in the performance stakes. Sure get off an R1 and the GS is a slug. But why compare.

Our 1150 brother may take the piss out of the early frailties of the 1200 but like the 1150 most have been ironed out and the 1200 is here now.

A strange remark

"....Despite what anybody says, you'll have problems with either bike." Well, over a 7 year period I have had an 11OOR, an 1150GS and the 1200GS and I have had problems with NONE of them. The same sort of record as many friends who have had BMW's even longer than I have (30 years -half in UK half in France) I have a theory that a few poor dealers or poor mechanics are the main source of a lot of problems - but again any vehicle that is not ridden regularly is more likely to suffer problems.
Coming back to the point, having moved from an 1150 (which I thought was a superb bike) to the 1200, I cannot imagine ever wanting to go back to the older, heavier, more cumbersome & less powerful machine.
