I was changing some of my nuts and bolts for my vast array of stainless steel nuts and bolts ( :thumb to Steptoe) when I managed to drop my 4mm allen key into the petrol tank :spitfire :spitfire

What a knob now go forth and multiply I said to myself or words to that effect.

If my memory serves me correctly the fuel is drawn throuh a net/gauze filter so the allen key shouldn't block the flow.

Has anybody done this and lived to tell the tale. I can't face taking the bloody tank off and extracting the offending item via the pump/filter plate. Hopefully leave it in until I do a filter change.

Am I a twat or what :o :o

Why not try and retreive it with a magnet? After first checking that the others are :o

I've got a magnet on a stick, which would be more likely to get it out than a magnet on a string in an iron tank ;)

magnet maybe?

one of the ones on a extendable shaft

it might take a few goes since the tank is metal too...
but it will be a fun filled adventure for ten mins :D

great minds think alike but you type faster :D

Been there, done it on aircraft where the potential for disaster is somewhat greater. That's why I've magnets on sticks, magnetic screwdriver bits, magnetic bowls for the nuts / bolts and washers etc etc :mmmm :mmmm

Pity a lot of the fasteners were made out of titanium.

Tried that for all of 5 minutes. Trouble is there's a baffle or some sort in the way and I can't get the magnet on extendable shaft passed it.

I'm off on an around the island ride next week so I might have to bite the bullet and get on with it. Don't want anything to go peek tong on the Turkish side

Alarm door contact magnet and string worked for me :thumb and yes i'm a silly tosser too :D took a few trys though to get it.

It will be to big & heavy to stop fuel supply & will just sit in the bottom of the tank' just get it out next time it has a fuel filter .
Woul still have a go with a magnet just for the fun of it :D

I wouldn't worry about it -

No harm having an allen key sliding along the metal surface every time you brake and accelerate. Wearing through the painted surface, causing debris inside the tank, rusting problems in the future etc etc .

:D

It will just sit there doing nothing ........................................until..........

You go over a big bump . The allen key jumps up. Shorts out the contacts on the pump. Makes a spark.
BOOM.
You watch as your balls fly past your visor just before you pass out.

Only kiddin. I would just leave it.

:jes

(he's not you know) :D

You guys  I never know when your pulling my chain ;) ;)

Bitten the bullet and taken the tank off, drained the fuel, removed the plate inside the filler neck and retrieved the sodding allen key.

To justify my time I did the fuel filler mod and didn't have to worry about any stray swarf :thumb

Happy days are here again. I can rfest assurred now that my never regions are not going to pass me at 80mph.

Cheers and have fun.
