As it says!
When changing the oil in my final drive the allen socket has sheared off in the allen filler cap when attempting to undo it.

Of course this has happened after I have drained the oil so I can't ride it anywhere:spitfire

Would appreciate some advice as to how to get the stub of the socket out of the cap - its pretty flush with nothing much to get hold of.:thedummy :thedummy

Or failing that how to get the cap out of the final drive - it must be in pretty tight (not me honest!)

Thanks guys........here's hoping:thumb2

Yes, you certainly save money buying cheap tools.

One bonus - If it broke that easy, it should be easy to get out.

You also broke one of the cardinal rules of tinkering - not undoing the filler cap first.

The obvious reason - so you can be sure you can fill it up when you drain it.

But another reason, and very important on a GS - So you can see the oil level in the rear bevel before draining it. Because you could then tell if it had leaked any oil into the shaft.

As a last resort - pull the plastic cap off the breather on top of the final drive, and fill it through the breather. Measure out the amount needed first :D

I'd try......

First apply some plus gas or wd40 to the sheared hexy.
Then obtaining a small sized tap, say M6 or M8, that has a pointed end rather than flat bottom and using a 1lb hammer, put the point of the tap as close to the centre of the hexy and give the end of the tap a light blow with the hammer.
Your only looking either to mark the hexy with a dot or move it slightly so don't go mad.
If it only moves, go to * below, if it dots, then put the tap back in the dot and lean it over say at 50 degrees and tap the tap with the hammer once but have the tap pointing at one of the corners of the sheared hexy, then repeat this another five times but point the tap to another corner after each blow.
Keep applying the oil after each blow.
You should find that the hexy will loosen in the bolt go to *.

*A magnet or a blast of air down one side of the hexy with get it out.

Hope this works, best of luck.
Keep us posted.

Just the job for one of those cheapAldi wlders, you could just weld on a bold and drag that off ? Of course you could end up welding the thing into the plu too. Maybe drill a small hole in it and use a stud extracter/small screw/pin glued into hole to pull it out

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. And advice...........:rob

Weld onto it and wheich it out with mole grips. the welding heat will unsieze the filler cap.
Alternatively - if its a cheapo allen socket you may be able to drill into it, hammer in a torx bit and unscrew the plug that way.

Success

Thanks for all the replies.

Timpo's methos worked first time in about one minute flat:bounce1

Applied WD40. gave the sheared stump a few sharp raps with a centre punch in different directions and it came loose, applied a magnet and out it came.:beerjug:

Lesson learnt about cheap tools:o

Thanks guys
