Almeria to Melilla in September

We (3) plan to travel on the Almeria route to Melilla. Any tips for the border crossing? is it as chaotic as some sugest? Is it the same in and out?
I've only been over once before from Tarifa to Tanger, i got a foriegners ID number but its in my old passport, will that number be void now? should i get another, as the boys haven't been befor and will need to get a number anyway?
Any other tips on this route in general would be very much appreciated.

Melilla is supposed to be worthwhile spending a couple of hours looking at, and given the horrific queues at the frontier I'd recommend you doing this, then tackle the frontier when everything is calmer. Chris Scott had his soft luggage go walkabout on the ferry earlier this year, so anything you can't secure take to your cabin (or the luggage lockup if sleeping on the floor).
