Firstly - it would seem a lot of GS owners are living up to their names of being Tossers...... :D - more on that later....

The story goes as follows:

Browsing Gumtree and eBay as you do for a GS related deal....

Spotted a 2009 R1200GS 35,000 miles, service history, full luggage, been used all year round.

Bike is located in a Place called Cardross - north west of Glasgow. Being a bit sceptical of the 'bargains' and most commonly the scams on the web, I proceeded with caution in enquiring about the bike.

emails exchanged - phone calls followed, i'm planning a journey to Scotland from York.

Got a lift up north with my dad in the car - the bike is for him - he's buying it, I get to ride it home.

Money changed hands deal done,
Tomtom fixed to the bars, off i set off on the way home.

Decide to stop in a petrol station a mile or so into journey......

Both tyres soft - as the display confirms by flashing at me rather annoyingly.
No oil to be seen on the sight glass either.

Oil purchased, took nearly a litre - full service due and check over when we get the bike home.
Seems a bit 'slow starting'.... - more on that later too....

Still - off I go heading south.....
Nice scenery round here, even on the main routes....

Blasting away nicely.

Pass a few bikers in a group, all wave and nod.

No dramas until 107 miles into my journey on the M74 - Gretna area.....

What was that??? - slight hesitation..... a misfire.... hmm... cleared up for half mile.....

Must have been me.....

Press on again.....

Then....... Again, what was that....?

Hmm.... It's died.... Nothing.....

Coasting to a halt, totally dead.

This bargain might not be what it seems...

Ignition on, ignition off, back on again, hit the starter, CLICK...... nothing!

Hmm, alternator must be dead......

Phone call to Green Flag then.....

Nearly an hour goes by, being passed by several bikers. I also counted 4 Riders on BMW GS's go by.....

Green Flag turn up in a Corsa Van with a trailer.

Loaded up, straight into the services - i'm needing food as i had a 4 fingered Kitkat at 5 am when we set off - its now 2:30pm.

Recovery man confirms battery has ceased it's life.

Jump pack starts the bike up again no problems, once disconected - bike cuts out.

Bummer.

The seller seemed to withhold that piece of information....

At least I saved the cost of a tankful of fuel by going home with the recovery man!

A much longer than planned day out - my ETA was going to be around 3:30 pm if the bike made it home.

Unloaded and in the house by 6 pm that night.....

Battery ordered same evening...

Monday morning - I've got a few days off work so decide to have a good look and clean up the GS.

Robbed the battery from my GSA and fired the thing up.....

No dramas. All turn out good.

Time for a wash then!

Has cleaned up loads better.

Wheels are looking sad and flaking.
Footrests, brake lever, stands all corroded and looking sad....

Time for a spruce up!

Looks like a good clean bike now, few issues to sort, but looking respectable again!

Only issue is the mileage is now flashing on the display, was all ok when set off before the issues of flat battery and breaking down.

Dan.

I'm always bothered about "bargains" on fleabay etc & pay over the top from a stealer.
Lets hope you have no more problems with the bike.

Is that an oil patch on the last 2 pictures?:aidan

Is that a wind turbine fitted to your seat? If so it will keep your battery topped up...:D

Hope you didn't pay too much?

Corrosion
Fucked battery
Recovery home
Low on oil...... took a litre:eek:
Tyres under inflated

Sounds like a champion seller who thoroughly neglected the bike:blast

Re the tossers who went by - I bet you weren't wearing a "polite" vest so they didn't see you....

It was about half the price of a 'good one'...... :thumb

Corrosion - can be sorted - time and effort.
Battery - £30
Recovery - Free!
Oil - £8 a litre
Tyres blown up - 20p

Correct - neglected! :nenau Paramedic that used it all year round and washed it once I think!

But has been used - not pampered!

It should make a good bike at a decent cost with a bit of effort over winter.

Good, as long as the price was right
