I went to Monte Cassino a few years ago.

Biggest problem was finding somewhere to stay on the way down - everywhere was full due to Italian holidays

ended up riding all the way there - arrived about 10pm

Good campsite in the town - I decided to say there and just do rides out, Pompeii, Anzio, Taranto etc

If you're after military history best take some books and do it yourself.

The Italians dont seem very interested.

there is a small museum in the abbey but its mainly about the destruction and rebuilding.
Plenty of shrapnel to be found anywhere you stop on the way up.

The museum in Anzio was closed the day I went - I think its in the council office - best to check.

I've just done a big euro tour with a small group and I say go on your own.

groups are a pain in the arse to ride with - evenings can be quiet but then you are more likely to meet other people

enjoy anyway:thumb

I`m booked on the tunnel 17th August and heading towards picking my wife up at the Venice airport on the 25th, so will not be in a hurry, planned to spend the time in/around the Alps/Dolomites, perhaps we could meet up, have you got a route planned? john

hi john, looking at ferry on the 19th aug with a night in dunkirk then early start down towards lille then keep on free autobahn down towards basel just to get some miles out of the way then ease it off for a relaxing tour towards italy. nothing in stone as yet tho

I rode down to Italy a month ago with 5 others from this site and had a great time (thread here). The route we took is here.

I would recommend the 'Route Napoleon' between Antibes and Grenobles. Wonderful twisties, great tarmac and very little traffic.

I have a retired colleague who used to travel a lot and I left him my credit card details and he would research the hotels for us. This meant I could call him and say we want a hotel in Pisa tomorrow night. He would see what was available and then give us a couple of options to chose from. We would chose one and then he would book it for us. It allows you to be flexible with the route and timing.

If you can find someone to do this for you it saves you spending time on a poor internet connection trying to find your next hotel or riding around at your destination trying to find a vacancy. More time for riding.
