I've been looking around for some waterproof boots and have considered SIDI Black-Rain, Daytona and BMW.

Black-Rain seemed OK but I don't like the idea of a non leather boot (call me old fashioned), plus they are a bit too narrow.

Daytonas seem OK but they are silly money.

BMW are OK but didn't really win me over.

Anyway, I might try a pair of Altberg boots. They have a good reputation, are a good price and British Made too!

What is their sizing like? I currently have SIDI Felxforce SRS boots and these are a perfect fit at size 45 (10.5, I think).

When I buy normal shoes I normally go for size 10.

As my feet are broad I was thinking that this size would be OK for Altberg boots too.

Any guidance out there, please?

Ring Altberg and ask for their advice. I have always found them very helpful.

Altberg advice

Hi Jonshread,
Just bought a pair of Bandogs last Saturday. My wife also bought a pair of biking boots. Haven't tested them yet other than walking around to break them in. Very well built and we were impressed by their customer service. As we don't live too far away we were able to call in for a fitting. They measured us both up and were able to supply the boots 'off the shelf'. They do them in different width fittings so I'm sure that you'll find the right ones for you. I realise that you live quite a way away but give them a call on 01748 850615/826922 they seem to be really friendly and helpful.

I can really recommend BMW's boots, I wore mine last weekend off-roading in Wales, and I was going through water that came up over the front wheels and my feet stayed dry all day!

Well worth having IMHO. :)

Altbergs :thumb

I've been using All Weather Hoggs for a couple of years now, excelent boots on and off the bike and totaly waterproof so far ( been through some serious downpoors on the bike, fording with Fanum and hill walking in all weathers)

Good durability as well, I wear mine every day to the almost total exclusion of any of my other footwear. And absolutly top customer service, it's a long way I know but if you can get up to the shop for a fitting you won't regret it.
Failing that give them a bell, they do several shows and events each year, they may be coming to you in the near future??

What is the difference between regular and microlite Altberg boots?

Try BMW Contour Plus

I thoroughly recommend BMW Contour Plus. Completely waterproof, extremely comfortable on and off the bike. They have the added advantage of a concealed lace-up fastening which means they will fit any size of calf and accomodate thick leathers.

I tried Altberg, even visited them, but found them difficult to deal with. Possibly down to someone having a bad day.

I am going to give BMW another try.
Altberg may be good but I cannot be arsed waiting six weeks for them.
Plus, they do look a bit naff, one up on Derri boots.

It would be worth the wait to ensure that an expert has guided you through the perils of finding the right boots. Why six weeks? Get yourself some Keen sandals if you're more concerned about image. Corporate Image above purpose methinks!

Right, firstly I called my local (Purley) HG store and asked them about their Tuareg boots which I quite like. Unfortunately, they have none in stock and have supply problems from Germany (sounds familiar and just like Touratech), not sure when they will have stock.

I've looked again at the Altberg boots and like the idea of a dual purpose boot, such as the all weather Bandog.

Looking at their dimensions for my size 10.5 (45) they say that the boot is 27CM high, no problem, but it has a circumference of 26-36CM. If I measure 27CM up my leg from my heel and then measure the circumference there it is 38CM, so I don't think they would fit anyway.

Now, I'm not a massive bloke and have never had any problems with boots or anything else fitting my calves. So I guess they are no good for me, shame because I may have gone for them.

It's funny because the typical GS'er is hardly pintsize (ladies excepted :D), so how come so many recommendations?

Jonshread,
Bandogs are lace-up beauties. You can make them fit. That's why I went with them. I'm rough with things; another reason why I went for them. Believe me, I've nothing to gain from 'selling' these boots. Sometimes you just get the feeling that some things are right. Good luck.

I'll give 'em a call to see if they will fit.

With a user name like yours I doubt if you wold have a problem with calf sizes. :D

Either that or get some Danner lace-ups.

Arguably the best on the market bar none - had mine for years, faultlesssly warm and dry, and you can go walking in them. And get them repaired/re-soled etc as you need to.

Mind you, unless you are walking in snow/freezing temps, your feet tend to come out like an over-cooked suet pudding if you have the insulated ones - great on the bike though.

If you need some cheaper things on the same theme, you can get Arny surplus versions - still gore-tex and thinsulate, but no vibram sole.

Are the Arny ones now surplus because he's gone into politics?
