On certain occasions I am getting alternate flashing General warning light with ABS warning light. This normally happens when I am braking going down hill to stop at traffic lights etc.

I have looked in the manual at it mentions that this is caused by the fluid levels in the ABS being to low, I have checked the levels with the ignition off and they seem fine. Do I need to turn the ignition on and then check the levels?

Once the lights are flashing if I turn the ignition off and then back on the lights stop flashing and everything is ok.

Both back brake and front brake are both working fine.

Is there anything i can do to resolve this or is it a trip to BMW:tears

Not an expert, but where are you checking the brake fluid levels?

Plus one on what John says

You need to check the ABS unit under the tank

Take note that you have 2 control circuits and 2 wheel circuits

The control circuits are supplied brake fluid from the lever / foot pedal reservoirs to the ABS unit and then the wheel circuits are fed from the reservoirs on the ABS unit

Never Ever try to bleed them like ordinary brakes!

If your front pads or rear pads are badly worn the system is probably lettting you know you are low on fluid in one of the wheel circuits

If you have those nasty servo brakes, try changing (dont just check its working) tail/stoplight bulb.
Some weird voodoo sh1t about loading/error conditions confuse the ABS i believe.
