Alternator belt change

Just about to start 36K service. Haynes shows how to change the drive belt but makes no mention of any adjustment. Is he wrong or right?

Do a search it's another 1200 foible you have to stretch the belt to fit it!

Thanks both. I've added the 'info' site to my favourites. V useful. Just one/two more q's if you don't mind. Why take the old belt off from the top pulley first but fit the new belt from the lower pulley?
Could the peice of plastic trick be used for installing as well or would it slip?
