Alternator light and rev counter problem

I'm with DrFarkoff on this one. You don't know if you haven't got a charging problem unless you monitor the voltage over the entire range.

You said you checked charging at idle. But you didn't say you had checked at 5000 rpm and above. Normally if the charging circuit is dropping out at high rpm you would expect to see other symptoms other than charging light. Headlights dimming etc, but you have HID lights fitted which draw less power than conventional lights and I don't think they dim. I'm assuming your not above 5000 rpm for long period, in which case if your battery is good it will be taking over providing the power to drive all your electrics and ignition, which could be why you said the bike runs OK. The battery charge will be replenished once you drop below 5000 rpm when the charging resumes.

If this was my bike I would connect the voltmeter up to either the battery terminals or jump start terminals and take it for a ride, checking to see what the voltmeter was showing above 5000 rpm. If as I suspect you do see a voltage drop then you most probably have a charging problem.

When you do lift the tank, to check electrical connections, it might be worthwhile removing the voltage regulator pack from the alternator and have a look at the brushes.

When I checked the charge going to the battery originally it was fine on tick over at at higher revs ie when the charging light comes on and the rev counter plays up. I am pretty sure that charging is not a problem. I will do as mentioned and try whilst riding to see the outcome.

The earth you talk about through to the dash I will check I can do this at the shite connectors by the rev counter but I think I will also remove the tank and do a process of illimination just for peace of mind.....

When I moved the connectors around the revs and light seemed fine but as soon as they were left the problem re occurred (there is no room to cut so I will have to lengthen what is there)

Cheers guys (great forum and obviously loads of knowledge)

At last it's sorted...... Bike started cutting out and so I dropped it over to Gary Webb (really nice guy fantastic mechanic can't recommend enough)

He instantly found a broken ignition loom which he replaced and solved all problems so obviously erratic tacho and illuminating charge light was due to the ignition cutting out.

Bloody marvellous :friday
