Hello

I have a good look round the forum and think I may have solved the issue, but need some more advice. I run a camcorder on My BMW R1200gs and noticed I am getting a lot of whine when I play the video back. Good effect but gets a bit annoying after a while. Disappears when the music is playing on the Zumo and when I talk. It has to be alternator.

I run:
Autocom 300 with pillion output connected to camcorder via a ground loop
I have a Zumo 550 fitted.

Have I got a bad ground for the Autocom ?

What do I need to sort it:
Better ground - Presently Autocom goes to ground on frame
Another Ground loop isolater
or an in line noise filter fitted before the Autocom.
Going round in circles here...

Help

What's the ground loop you have installed? As far as I'm concerned a ground loop is a faulty installation between connected equipment using a different power supply, and you'll struggle to do that on a motorcycle.

Have I got a bad ground for the Autocom ?

Possibly. :nenau Take a resistance measurement between your Autocom ground and the -Ve terminal on the battery: It must be less that 0.5 ohms to qualify as a decent length of copper wire for this kind of kit.

What do I need to sort it?
Better ground - Presently Autocom goes to ground on frame

See above.

Another Ground loop isolater
or an in line noise filter fitted before the Autocom.

The addition of these devices is typically above and beyond the call of duty for this type of installation although, the noise filter may tune out your whine but it will also affect your audio spectrum.

Check your installation for continuity or listen to the noise your tyres make on the road and compare. :thumb

Is the camcorder powered off the bike? If so, and the Autocom is as well (300 is Super Pro Avi, correct?) then it sounds like you're suffering from Ground Loop Interference (GLI).
