Alternator Pulley Nut Removal

Hi Folks
The front cover on my bike is fecked and following Bendy Toys advice I bought a new one (second hand) to restore, I have stripped it, painted it, replaced the bearing and generally made it look lovely. I was going to powder coat it but it has locating dowels so I decided against it and just went with paint.

Armed with my home made puller I went out to the garage to fit it this afternoon and I could not for the life of me remove the alternator pulley nut, the one that comes through the front engine cover. I tried putting it in gear and keeping the back wheel immobile but to no avail. I didn’t want to damage anything so I stopped trying until I had asked for help here.

Is there anyone out there that has done this job and knows how to remove this nut?
The one holding the pulley on, not me. :pullface
 
The alternator pulley nut, probably needs a tool to lock the pulley, but you probably know that. Not much help am I. :(

Regarding powder coating - Any areas masked off with ordinary masking tape wont get coated. When it's done, just clean off the dried glue with WD40. To keep threads or holes clear, screw in a cheap bolt or plug with soft wood. You could try heating the case to get the dowels out more easily, but the holes will have to be plugged. TBH I would simply mask them off.

My wheels and other stuff have come back. Annoyingly the coaters helpfully masked off the tyre valve holes. So I now have to clean off the coating flash and paint the bare metal. The wheels do look good though.
 
Hi Bendy Toy, I have just worked out that I need a crankshaft pulley holding tool to finish this job Ahaaaaaaaaa and so on with lots of swear words.

I Seem To Remember that his method was to put a ratchet/breaker bar on the nut, wedge it up against part of the bike, and with the spark plugs removed, quickly press the starter button.

However, I may have got it wrong, so I'd wait for himself to confirm/deny it...
 
You could try and borrow a battery impact gun. That will get the bugger off without a locking tool.

I have a air impact gun but there is bugger all room to get it in, the telelever would have to come off to allow access.

I undid it on my 1100 when I replaced my Hall sensor. I just stood on the foot brake with the bike in gear and the nut came off without too much effort!
 
Fit socket onto pulley nut. Fit socket bar onto socket.
Hold bar with one hand. Briefly Tap starter button with the other.
Nut is now undone. :thumb.
 
Keep thumb outside the bar, avoids breaking thumb if nut seized on threads. Same as starting an aircooled hand cranked diesel engine.

Might be best to NOT hold the socket bar between your knees :D:D

Never mind you getting it right, I hope I get it right. Going out to the garage to try it in a minute. If you hear a very big bang and someone swearing you will know what's happened. :D

Stand on the L/H side of the bike so the bar is in the palm of your left hand, and tap the starter button with your right hand.

Don't worry, there's no massive forces involved, a 10 year old could hold the bar.
