any one here know if an alternator from a 2005 R1200GS will fit and work on a 2009 R1200 GSA?
they have two different BMW part numbers although they are both manufactured by Denso in Japan. I understand the standard 2005 alternator produces less than the output on the GSA.

The electrical fittings are different and the pulley will be a different size.
You can swop pulleys over but you'll need to feck around with the fittings.

alternator

thanks for that Sir, I will just have to wait until the right one pops up

Does that mean that the loom is different from gs to gsa assuming that they've got unique connectors ?

Alternator Electrical Connections are not model specific but model year of bike

The wiring is functionally the same but the connectors are different**. GS has a Denso alternator GSA has a Bosch. The latter is bit more powerful but with HID or LED lights the additional power generation is academic.

** At least that's the idea I'm working to because decent used Bosch gennys are hard to find.

My GSA has a Denso.

Ive ordered a used GS Denso. The GS bikes do fine without the extra 100(ish) watts the GSA can deliver.
