Looking for complete info on alternator change on 2007 r1200 GS
Cheers guys

The Adv version will fit though needs a different connector plug. If anyone knows of a lower cost car type that will fit we'd all love to know.

Connections changed in 2007 so make sure you get the correct one. The pulleys are the only difference between the standard GS and ADV models and can be changed over, or fit corresponding alternator belt, 595 standard GS, 582 ADV .

I usually end up getting them for customers off USA ebay, almost always like new and a quarter of the UK breakers price and generally arrive within 3 days.

Basically remove front alternator cover and upper plastic surround, remove tank and undo alternator securing bolts, lift out through the front - replacement is opposite of removal. .

I replaced mine (2004 GS) recently. I went for a like for like replacement, as although fellow tossers suggested in various posts that the later ones were better because of higher capacity, I don't run auxiliary lights or anything and I didn't want to be messing around changing pulley wheels or connector plugs. Apart from being awkward to get at, it all went pretty smoothly. It certainly cured the terrible high-pitched whining from the old one, which had several cracks in the casing, presumably causing contact between the fixed and moving parts. Now the neighbourhood dogs don't follow me around, barking.

Other tips - this was useful http://www.r1200gs.info/howto/alt-belt.html, but also find the YouTube video of how to replace your alternator belt. It's by a Greek guy if I remember rightly, but basically it uses an adjustable spanner to turn the lower pulley wheel, with the belt just being pushed on to the pulley by hand. After struggling for ages with the cut out bit of plastic from a Coke bottle thing, I did that and the job is done in literally seconds. The Coke bottle got it off easily enough, but not back on.

Finally, UK suppliers of used items wanted about £200, but I got a really good (looked new) one from an Italian e-bay seller for about £65 delivered. Took a while to arrive, though.
