I just got a set of full panniers with my new 1300 GSA from BMW with the "Box Clever" promo.

After a month of waiting for the panniers, I got them collected from the dealer. When I got them home I found they were all heavily stained with something. The top box in particular is visible from meters away.

Before anyone says, just go ride it. It's a €32k bike, I expect the finish to reflect that. Has anyone experienced this with the aluminium panniers on the new models.

Just send them back.

I’m not sure that I would describe that as 'heavily stained’ but if you’re not happy it’s straightforward, return them. However I’ve heard they are in short supply

My top box and RH pannier were the same. It was worse under artificial light. I gave them a good wipe down with waterless wash / detailer and it reduced it. I forgot about it until now. Could well have gone. Looked like some residue from the manufacturing process.

The finish shouldn’t be like that. It’s crap.
That looks as if the boxes have been wrapped for shipping before the coating has cured? Possibly to expedite orders through the system? If it were me, I’d be asking for replacements but hanging on to those you’ve got till new boxes arrive; however, not sure of your consumer rights in Eire. Good luck 👍

Just think of this

If you went to buy these seconhand would you want them.

That is what the person will be thinking when you want to sell them and if you p/x them with the bike I am sure the dealer will mark them down.

You have paid good money (does not matter that they are ‘free’ as part of a promotion) so expect them in top condition

Wasn't there something on here recently about the free luggage being unavailable due to a manufacturing issue with the alu/coating. Sounds like they have just given you a faulty set...

I checked that with my dealer and they told me it was nonsense and don't believe everything on the Internet. Just demand outstripping stock. Maybe they're not well informed, but I've found them honest and reliable enough in my dealings over the years.

I just went to my garage to double check my set. What marks there were have gone. I just washed it off, as I said above.

To be honest, after a few seasons of decent use, there will be plenty of marks on them. Especially as they stick out so damn far! If it hadn't been for the 'free' offer (no cash adjustment if you don't take it up), I would have gone for the Apduro hard luggage. Same capacity, but narrower and taller. First use of the BMW set is this month, be interested to see how I get on.

To the OP, try washing them, maybe a bit of panel wipe, if you have any. My experience is it comes off and leaves it looking fine. Yours may be just the same, it looks like it from the photo.

I would have assumed he has already done that - before posting

Did a bit of research and tried some panel wipe etc. Someone on Facebook who is local suggested Vulcanet wipes which worked a threat. There is indeed a lot of nonsense floating around on social media about the panniers being withdrawn / faulty which I dont believe one bit.

Agree. My dealer is still receiving them. I got my panniers three or four weeks ago, when they got some allocated to them, then a week or two later, they had a consignment of top boxes and I received mine. So they're still coming through. Looks to be a rationing / insufficient production issue.

Mine are perfect, now I've cleaned them up. Shouldn't have had to do that, but at least they're fine.

I did chase my dealer frequently for delivery. Maybe he who shouts loudest gets the call?

I can't say they're spectacular. Not really anything special, just regular hard luggage. Can't see why they would inflict production problems. Maybe the change to their attachment mechanism has caused it?

Who makes them for bmw ?

If I buy a pair of expensive shoes, I don’t expect to have to polish / farkle them so they look right.

Demand a change.

It’ll only bug you every time you look at them.

An expensive item has been delivered not as it should be. Period.

Why change them now that they've cleaned up just fine?

There's a spectrum. At one extreme, shove them back in their face and demand your 'rights'. At the other extreme, get walked over. In the middle, if they clean up fine, move on and enjoy.

If they don't clean up, accuse the dealer of being a front for a Somalian white slavery ring and lob a brick through their window? 🙃

I failed to read that correctly then, I thought they weren’t up to snuff still.

Poor show of bmw though, and poor show from dealer setting bike and releasing it when it’s not right.

This is why people are now going Chinese, the ‘proper’ brands bring little more to the table.

Personally I’ll never buy another bmw from a main dealer, the service I’ve had has been shocking.

Yes, I think all the majors must be pretty scared of the Chinese products right now.

Sorry you've had a bad experience. When it goes bad, it can get infuriating.

I buy with my eyes open. These things have become complex. Stuff must go wrong. It's about how it is recovered for the customer. If that's not done well, it rubs salt into the wound. I've perhaps, been lucky so far, with the product and the aftercare.

I have two 50 year old bikes. They are mostly simple. But they are old and stuff wears out. So I couldn't use them for what I do on the GSA. I doubt there any any simple, high capacity motorbikes being made nowadays. Emissions and safety regs mean even the Chinese products are complex. Personally, I prefer to fall back on a BMW warranty. Perhaps naively hoping I won't need to!

Mine were the similar, brought it to the attention of the sale manger. A few minutes of elbow grease or degrease on his part and the finish was perfect.
