Ambient temperature gauge

water/intake air

What do you assume the lower of the temperature figues - not the one that shows +/- 75 c (which would be bloody hot air) - shows?

The upper reading is water temp and the lower air temp at the air intake (why on earth we would want to know that I've no idea).

Because it's as good a place to measure it as any other; lots of motorcycles use the same point, nicely shielded from the heat of the engine and from reflected heat from the road.

Report back when it really is 'bloody freezing' or so hot that it scorches your eyeballs.

Rider's Manual p.70

There is no ambient temperature display. There is Inair which is intake-air temperature (and we don't just have iandavid's word for that - see p.70 Rider's Manual). This is for some sort of engine management and only appears when multifunctional display is in lap timer mode. I have no idea where in the intake system the sensor is placed and whether it is affected by engine heat; however, my experience is that the readings don't equate to ambient air temperature. Thanks to those who have contributed to this thread. I don't have anything else to say on this topic.

I was under the illusion that the IN air was the ambient temp but having got bored with the manual before page 70 will bow to you on that.
I would however point out that when out with Roadcraft rider a few weeks ago my IN air temp reading was always reading the same has his GS ambient temp so i think ( I stress think) that it won't be far off the mark

The best temp gauge you have is your bollocks. Low = hot, none = fuckin cold.

Over yesterday's 250 mile ride, the IN AIR temperature reading was consistently two degrees warmer than the temperature display on my Scottoiler. I assume that the Scottoiler's sensor is somewhere inside its control unit which on my bike sits by the front brake reservoir, directly in the wind blast as I hoon the awesome steed.

8 degrees according to the Scottoiler, 10 degrees according to the bike's display, 12 degrees according to the Met man, with his seaweed and fir cones; that's a 50% spread. Outrageous.
