Forgive me if this is a thick question, but I'm a bit of an iTunes plank. :(

My 16yr old has iTunes installed on my laptop. As you can imagine he's got hundreds of tunes either copied from numerous CDs or bought online - some are almost bearable.

I intend getting my own iPod someday, but given his taste in music would obviously want to keep my tunes totally separate from his. The boy has suggested keeping both our tunes on the same iTunes, but I would have thought that ploughing through literally hundreds of tunes transferring my tunes to my iPod would be a right PITA, especially as I'm crap with names and will probably have to listen to snippets of the tunes before deciding whose they are.

So what's the best way to do this? Can I have 2 iTunes on my computer (one for me and 1 for the boy) or is there some way of splitting our tunes on the same programme? :nenau

you could have 2 accounts on the computer with a different itunes on each. i think.

or have one account with all the music lumped in together, then create separate playlists and tell your ipods to sync only with the relevant playlist.

you'd still have to sort your music (into the playlists), but only once.

Doesn't each ipod have it's own name assigned to it?
So for instance 'Taff's ipod' might call up a different list of tunes to 'Taffylad's ipod'?
I'm just guessing here... :nenau

Hi Taff, It is really no problem you just drag and drop what you want onto your IPOD... Having said that I really hate Itunes and lots of shite that Mac come up with...

I have in this house a mac an Iphone, an Ipod touch and an IPOD classic BTW so have a relatively good reason for saying that I HATE IT....:augie

For the experts, here's another question....

My wife has an Ipod Classic, that a friend has put music on for her. Is there anyway that I can transfer that music to our PC, without Itunes wiping it all off by synching with whats already in Itunes on our PC.

Does that make sense:rolleyes:??

simples........ plug the ipod into the computer, don't sync it. then click on the ipod menu ( half way down on the left side, go into the music tab, find what you want then simply drag it out ( click on it and hold the mouse button down, move it to the folder of your choice)

I don't think so.....

try music rescue... Google it:thumb

:confused: I tried it before posting and it worked!? ( on my mac.... don't know if it diffently works on a PC but would have thought so:confused:

Just for clarity i was referring to Hatzyian's query...

Steve, sorry not dissing you. On a Mac I don't know, on a PC that won't work unless you know about unhiding things and read write parameters. Much easier to use music rescue. At least for PC:thumb

iTunes is working here, but I just want o keep my tunes separate from the boys errr ... "tunes".

That's what I'm trying to avoid. He has so much crap on it, that "finding what I want" could take me ages. :( TBH I would like to see just my tunes and I'm sure he doesn't want to see my playlist.

I guess like the others have mentioned, create a separate play list and put all of your more "tasteful"** music on that. than all you have to do is open that and dive in.

** Subjective......... :)

Him indoors and I share a lap top at home and have two different iTunes libraries for our respective iPods.

Now don't ask me the button pushing sequence to set this up initially but we are able to have two different iTunes libraries and can switch between his n hers by holding down the shift key when starting up iTunes and it then asks us which library we want to launch (if you don't hold down shift it launches the last one used). Thinking back, I think I got the instructions from the Apple website (no way I worked it out on my own!).

One of the benefits is we don't have to worry about adding the right songs to the right playlist but we can still share a music files between the two libraries if he has something on his I particularly like.

We use the same iTunes store account for both but I'm sure there's a way to have that separate too if you don't want to be picking up the tab on your card for the boys purchases.

Hi Cookie, You have helped me out in the past, thanks...

Now then, I come to you with my Ipod with a film you want, you own the film already on DVD but can't be bothered to rip it, can you easily take the film from my IPOD to your MAC and then put it onto your IPOD?

This opens up a few questions I know, but I believe the answer is no, I also believe that you already own the DVD so you should be able to do it....

no you can't do it with apple software, and what you suggest is certainly illegal in this country whatever you'd like to be able to do, so is not something i'd be doing, oh deary me no :augie

can't see why apple would be helping you to do it either. i'm sure that even if they wanted to give you that functionality, the studios they need to do business with in the itunes store would not be best pleased. it's probably a condition of their agreements with the studios that it's made as difficult as possible.

but...if i did do such things, here's how i'd do it:

use a 3rd party program to get the file from the ipod. plenty about, from free upwards.

rip it direct from the disc with iRip. can output as dvd or a number of common formats including mp4 ipod friendly format.

simply download it in the right format from a so called "cyberlocker" in about 15 mins. what you're doing is illegal anyway, so why fcuk about? :D

maybe consider using another program that will do what you want. maybe media monkey does it?
maybe use another player? a zune perhaps? :P

i dunno if a zune would do that BTW, i've never seen one. few people have.

so...

plenty of simple ways round your problem, but you seem to want itunes to do it. it's never going to, but for me, it does everything else i need in a really slick way.

i admit, if you're stuck in some windows 98 - stuffing things in folders by hand - time warp, itunes can be can seem a bit overwhelming, but once the concept of syncing libraries and playlists is grasped, it's all so easy.

i think such problems will soon be a thing of the past anyway. you won't keep any media at all on your devices, but stream from the cloud.
frankly, i'm surprised dvd rental shops still exist when i can easily stream HD dvd direct from apple or lovefilm without visiting their depressing (and strangely smelly) premises where they never have the film i want in stock.

dvd/cd slots are already disappearing from apple kit, so can't be long before all the others copy them as usual.

just in case i come across as a TOTAL apple fanboi, i would like to point out that i do have some problems with them:

1) they compete only at the top end where they are so far ahead of the game, that they have no competition at all. not a good thing. they are way too dominant.

2) everybody's got their products now. the exclusivity is completely shot :(

We agree, thanks again for your help in the past and possible future...:thumb

um, a small correction:

my quote: rip it direct from the disc with iRip

got my progs mixed up. iRip is a program for transferring files from ipod to mac/pc. i've not used it.

the program i meant to recommend is RipIt from the same developer, which is the easiest, fastest, most reliable dvd ripper i've ever used. doesn't burn though.
if iRip is anywhere near as good as RipIt, it's probably worth investigation :)
